Sauber’s Youthful Revival: Gabriel Bortoleto Tipped to Transform Team’s ‘Retirement Home’ Image in 2025
Promising newcomer expected to rejuvenate Sauber's "retirement home" image
Sauber seemingly in search of fresh, young driving talent
Sauber is said to be exploring new possibilities for drivers in the future.
Going into 2025, Nico Hulkenberg will be behind the wheel for the team, with Valtteri Bottas expressing his desire to remain as his teammate.
The duo of seasoned F1 drivers has led to Sauber being dubbed a "retirement home" by Blick, a newspaper from Switzerland that publishes in German.
The publication has also mentioned that Sauber is deliberating on potential replacements for Bottas, prioritizing a youthful racer as their primary candidate.
Blick has identified Gabriel Bortoleto as the driver.
Bortoleto is presently leading the Formula 2 rankings.
However, he has not been selected for an upgrade to F1 in 2025.
Bortoleto, who is currently enrolled in McLaren's driving program, might join Sauber in the coming year, according to a report by Blick.
The report suggests that this arrangement would allow him to remain behind the scenes for a year prior to assuming a permanent racing position.
Sauber remains the sole Formula 1 team yet to earn any points this season.
Next year, they will maintain their existing identity before transitioning to Audi, which has ambitious plans, starting in 2026 with the introduction of new regulations.
Jonathan Wheatley of Red Bull is set to take on the role of team principal, whereas former Ferrari leader Mattia Binotto has taken up a high-ranking position with Audi.
