Riding at the Edge: Martin and Bagnaia’s Unseen Dominance in the MotoGP Arena
"Unbelievable Performance": Are Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia Receiving the Recognition They Merit?
"In earlier times, Casey was known for his sliding technique, and Valentino was famous for braking aggressively and sliding into corners. Nowadays, this style has become common among all riders."
Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia stand out significantly in the MotoGP world championship rankings, having claimed victory in 22 out of the 32 races this season.
Aleix Espargaro from Aprilia, who is among the select riders to have secured either a sprint or grand prix victory, recently expressed that the competitors for the championship are not receiving the recognition they merit for performing at such an elevated standard.
Are Martin and Bagnaia in agreement?
"I'm unsure. I'd be interested in going back to compete in the years 2014 and 2015 to truly gauge my abilities," Martin responded, alluding to a time when Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, and Marc Marquez were battling for dominance.
"We are in excellent condition," Martin stated. "To begin with, I don't pay much attention to others' opinions since they are beyond my influence. Additionally, I believe our performance is outstanding."
"Considering the bikes we have that are so similar, creating such a gap from the others is unbelievable. Recently in Japan, not just us, but also Marc and Enea, were 14 to 17 seconds ahead of the rider in fifth place. It's definitely astonishing."
"I believe we are performing exceptionally well right now. Records and lap times in sports globally are consistently improving, and this is due to advancements across the board. Consequently, we are becoming better athletes and surpassing those from previous generations."
Bagnaia remarked that "everyone is now doing what used to set us apart previously." Martin currently holds a 10-point lead over the defending champion, Bagnaia, in the standings with four races remaining. Both are part of a group of four riders competing on the newest GP24 Ducati, while an additional four riders are using the GP23 models from last year.
Bagnaia believes that the current standards in MotoGP have made it difficult to notice distinct variations in riders' techniques compared to earlier times.
Bagnaia expressed that he is unconcerned with others' opinions, as he is confident in their superior efforts compared to others.
"That's already a significant achievement, in my opinion. However, we must keep in mind that individuals are often connected to previous events. Overcoming history is quite challenging!"
"When considering instances like seeing Troy Corser at a press conference, it brings to mind Superbike racing. When reflecting on Superbike, it's apparent that the competitions today don't quite match the intensity of those from previous years."
"I believe the situation is quite similar in MotoGP at the moment, as standing out has become significantly more challenging. Previously, we had Casey Stoner known for his extensive sliding techniques, while Valentino Rossi was famous for his aggressive braking and sliding as he entered corners."
"At the moment, everyone is trying to achieve the best exit by braking as forcefully as they can. However, it's harder to notice distinctions now because everyone is employing strategies that used to set them apart."
"In my opinion, it's harder to comprehend our actions."
In Japan, our performance was extraordinary, given the consistent speed we kept up throughout the race. That's why I neither understand nor pay attention to what others have to say.
"At times, it's as if you're talking to a brick wall—completely pointless!"
With just 148 points still up for grabs, Ducati riders Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez are technically still in the race for the championship. However, they trail Martin by 79 and 81 points, respectively.
