Qualcomm’s Potential Acquisition of Intel: A Strategic Move Pivoting on US Election and Global Antitrust Scrutiny
Qualcomm's attempt to purchase Intel is partly dependent on the outcome of the US election and an examination by China, according to insiders. After having unofficial talks with Chinese authorities, Qualcomm might delay their decision until January, insiders suggest.
Qualcomm might choose to delay its decision until after the swearing-in of the new US president in January, considering the numerous intricacies of a possible deal with Intel, according to some sources.
A merger between Qualcomm and Intel, two companies whose products are integral to the digital infrastructure that underpins daily life – ranging from smartphones to electric cars – would likely attract rigorous examination from competition authorities in the US and globally. This also applies to China, a crucial market for both Qualcomm and Intel.
In September, Qualcomm tentatively reached out to Intel regarding a potential acquisition of the latter, which has been facing difficulties. During the same period, the company also informally consulted Chinese antitrust authorities to assess their position on any possible transaction, according to some sources.
Qualcomm hasn't gotten any response from the officials in China, who are holding off until the company officially places a bid, according to sources.
