Entrepreneur and academic Poman Lo discusses her motivation behind her efforts in sustainability.
Poman Lo is renowned for her forward-thinking approach. In late 2009, she disrupted Hong Kong's hotel industry by launching iClub, which she imagined as the city's inaugural carbon-neutral hotel. This occurred long before the concepts of "ESG" and "sustainability" gained prominence and became critical factors in diverse industries and corporate governance as we see today.
"Carbon neutrality was a largely misunderstood concept [back then]," Lo, the deputy chairman of Regal Hotels International, the parent company of iClub Hotels, remarks. "It was so innovative that people were unsure if it would have any significant impact."
Lo's decision to change paths over a decade ago was undoubtedly brave, but her unwavering faith in her mission made her steadfast. She views her work as incorporating a sense of purpose into each project or initiative she spearheads. According to her interview with the Post, she asserts that starting with the 'why' is the key to achieving success.
Even though she wasn't overly concerned about the eventual outcome, her gamble on iClub ultimately proved successful. "The hotel ended up becoming a highly popular brand, and it's been a profitable venture all this time," she points out.
Lo's overall takeaway was that it's feasible to generate influence along with profits, and that the success of companies can be attributed to the impact they make, rather than despite it.
