Pedro Acosta Aims to Blend Speed with Caution in Final MotoGP Rounds After Motegi Setbacks
Pedro Acosta: "Maintaining momentum, while avoiding falls!"
"I aim to keep up the momentum from the Motegi weekend, but without any falls!"
Pedro Acosta heads into the last quartet of races in his inaugural MotoGP season, aiming to recover from a mixed experience at Motegi.
The newcomer from GASGAS Tech3, after securing a second-place finish at Mandalika, achieved his first-ever pole position in Japan, going on to fiercely compete against the top Ducati riders for the win.
Regrettably, the young man, aged 20, left both situations without gaining anything.
Acosta experienced a crash while in the lead during the Saturday Sprint, and then, while initially in second place behind the ultimate victor Francesco Bagnaia, faced issues in the grand prix.
The number of crashes Acosta has experienced this season has reached 22, surpassing Marc Marquez as the rider with the highest number of falls this year. This has also led to him losing the fifth position in the world championship standings to his soon-to-be team colleague, Brad Binder.
Acosta's quickness is unquestionable, and the unfamiliarity with the newly surfaced Phillip Island track is expected to even the odds with the experienced riders in the class.
"After numerous races and journeys, enjoying a relaxing week at home has been wonderful. I've had the chance to unwind, take a break, and engage in training at my favorite spot," Acosta remarked.
"There are four highly competitive Grand Prix races remaining, and we'll be concluding our inaugural season as a MotoGP rider. My goal is to maintain the momentum from the Motegi weekend, albeit without the accidents!"
"Australia marks the initial weekend out of the last four, and it's a track that I truly enjoy. It stands as the most challenging in the series, and I'm optimistic about securing a positive outcome there."
"The sole challenge for someone from Mazarron moving to Australia is the cold weather… but we'll attempt to overcome it!"
"Nicolas Goyon, the team manager, expressed that Pedro Acosta's departure from Japan was marked by two Did Not Finish (DNF) results, leaving him with peak levels of frustration, especially since he was among the quickest throughout the weekend."
"Obviously, Pedro is in high spirits currently, having gotten a good grasp on the motorcycle. Given his intentions to compensate for the last round, Phillip Island appears to be an ideal setting for such a comeback."
Augusto Fernandez's tenure as a full-time MotoGP rider is coming to an end, and the speculated contract for a testing role with Yamaha has not yet become a reality.
"Fernandez expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming race, stating, 'Phillip Island ranks high on my list of preferred circuits; it's truly remarkable and exhilarating to compete there.' He acknowledged the recent challenges but emphasized the team's unwavering motivation."
"In Japan, there were several positive aspects that we simply need to leverage and transform into outcomes. Therefore, let's exert all our efforts to enhance our competitiveness in Australia."
"Goyon mentioned that although Augusto Fernandez had a challenging weekend in Japan, the Australian circuit, which is known for its unique characteristics, was a place where he showed speed in 2023 and is expected to avoid the recent problems he faced."
Practice sessions at Phillip Island commence on Friday.
