Passing the Torch: Liam Lawson Reflects on Daniel Ricciardo’s Support Amidst RB Driver Swap Drama
Liam Lawson shares the advice Daniel Ricciardo gave him following the Red Bull announcement
During the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, Liam Lawson recounts his discussion with Daniel Ricciardo.
Liam Lawson commended Daniel Ricciardo for his approach to the Red Bull driver exchange during conversations about the matter at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Though it was not officially declared during the Singapore Grand Prix, indications from Red Bull strongly suggested that Liam Lawson would take over Ricciardo's seat starting from the following race.
As a result, the Australian did not receive a formal farewell.
During several interviews following the race, Ricciardo couldn't hide his emotions while speaking with the press.
Lawson is set to join Yuki Tsunoda as a teammate at RB for the last six events of the season, aiming to showcase his talent to Red Bull in hopes of securing a spot on the main team by 2025.
During a chat with Formula 1, Lawson reminisced about a discussion he had with Ricciardo over the Singapore weekend.
"Fortunately, he's an amazing person," Lawson commented. "He understood that it had nothing to do with me. And that's likely the case with Daniel throughout this entire ordeal we've found ourselves in."
"Throughout the past year, it never seemed as though we were directly competing, despite all of us being involved in the sport in one form or another."
"Regarding Daniel, the experience was always positive; he consistently treated me well and was always willing to offer guidance whenever I was behind the wheel. Throughout the entire year, he showed kindness to me in whatever way possible."
"Thus, it didn't seem as though we were vying for the same position. Our career stages were quite distinct, which likely contributed to that feeling."
Lawson disclosed a significant detail from the discussion, including Ricciardo's comments.
Lawson mentioned, "I visited him and expressed my apologies for the entire ordeal, acknowledging it's unpleasant and regrettable that he had to experience it."
"He mentioned that clearly, there's no ill will towards me, and he advised, 'you only get one chance at F1, ensure you seize it' – and he wished me 'good luck'."
Ricciardo's comeback to Formula 1 seems improbable following his departure from Red Bull.
The driver, who has claimed victory in eight grand prix events, finds himself without prospects for the coming year and has explicitly stated his desire to remain in Formula 1 only if he can compete at the leading edge.
