A chance for Mick Schumacher in F1? Audi's announcement offers new possibilities

Mick Schumacher has unexpectedly become a potential candidate for the last F1 2025 spot.

Audi's new Formula 1 leader, Mattia Binotto, mentions that Mick Schumacher is being considered for the last available position at Sauber for the upcoming season.

The last available position for the 2025 season is with the Sauber team, owned by Audi. They are in the midst of choosing a teammate for Nico Hulkenberg, who is set to join from Haas after this year concludes.

Valtteri Bottas, the current holder, is considered a top candidate, alongside Williams' exceptional substitute Franco Colapinto and the frontrunner in the F2 championship, Gabriel Bortoleto, who are both thought to be strong contenders.

Binotto has recently affirmed that Schumacher, following his two-year stint as Mercedes' backup driver post his departure from Haas at the conclusion of 2022, has emerged as a surprise candidate for the position.

"Given that the other teams have already chosen their rosters, we have the privilege of taking our time," Binotto explained to the Italian daily, Corriere della Sera.

"We have two primary choices: firstly, a seasoned individual to guide our journey of advancement. Alternatively, a youthful, skilled driver to join us on our ascent to the pinnacle."

In response to whether Michael Schumacher's seven-time world champion son is being considered by the team, Binotto confirmed, "He is certainly under our assessment."

"I encountered him and engaged in conversation. My familiarity with him extends over many years, stemming from our time together at the Ferrari Driver Academy. I'm well-acquainted with his capabilities and benefits. His is among the candidates we're considering."

Binotto became acquainted with Schumacher during his tenure as the head of the Ferrari team, at a time when the 25-year-old from Germany was enrolled in Scuderia's program for emerging drivers.

Schumacher recently expressed to Sky Germany his aspiration to secure the remaining position on the F1 lineup for 2025.

"If the situation arises and our initial strategy fails, I'll handle it," he stated. "You should always have an alternative plan ready. Currently, I'm uncertain of our direction."
