McLaren Defends Pitting Strategy Despite Red Flag Setback at Sao Paulo Grand Prix
McLaren firmly supports their choice to bring Lando Norris into the pits right before a red flag was issued, a move that unfortunately compromised his race to some extent.
McLaren stands firm on their choice to call Lando Norris into the pits during the F1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, expressing no second thoughts.
Norris began the race in the lead, aiming to take advantage of his championship competitor Max Verstappen's lower starting position in 17th to extend his lead in the standings, yet the event did not unfold as he had anticipated for the McLaren racer.

Following the race's commencement, the lead was taken from them by Mercedes' George Russell, and their positions worsened when they opted for new intermediate tyres right as the Virtual Safety Car was concluding. Their situation was further compromised a few laps down the line by a red flag, which advantaged those who hadn't yet changed tyres – Verstappen included – by allowing them a cost-free tyre switch.
Verstappen seized the opportunity to secure an impressive win after a strong recovery, as Norris fell to sixth place at the finish line, a position that essentially crushes his diminishing chances for the championship.
"From our end, there are several aspects we must examine," Andrea Stella, the team principal at McLaren, informed Viaplay.
"We must acknowledge that the decision to pit during the red flag, due to the heavy rain, resulted in us losing some positions. However, we believe it was the correct action to take and have no regrets."
"The pit stop was approached with caution. In the end, this approach benefited the vehicles behind us that opted to remain on track, taking a slight risk, especially when the red flag essentially restarted the race. There are definitely lessons to be learned from this, but also several positive aspects to note."
Stella noted, "Naturally, beginning in pole position raises the expectation of finishing first. However, the race was filled with numerous incidents, some of which were not advantageous to us, resulting in our finish being quite distant from the podium. Nevertheless, we still managed to secure valuable points."
"Staying competitive was crucial. When considering the constructors' championship, it's vital that we perform better than Ferrari, and this positions us well for the last segment of the season."
Norris mentioned that Verstappen experienced some luck due to a controversial rule that lacks consensus, and he emphasized that remaining on the track under deteriorating conditions would have been unwise.
"Norris expressed his confidence in the team's words to Sky Sports F1, stating that there is mutual trust between them."
The outcome was simply a matter of misfortune. I'm not concerned with the aspect of looking back and considering what could have been; to me, that's merely fortune working in their favor. Red Bull benefited from a regulation that is generally unpopular. While they might have supported it in this instance, it's a rule that has historically faced opposition from all drivers.
"Today, it worked in their favor; it might have worked in ours had we opted not to participate, but it's foolish to dwell on that. Simply a stroke of bad luck today, nothing else. Naturally, it's disheartening."

"Accomplishing this in the presence of the amazing audience here in Brazil, who braved the rain all day yesterday, and then have been gathering here since the early hours of 4am or 3am today…
"An extraordinarily special day for which I'm immensely thankful to all those who played a part in making it a reality."

According to F1-Insider, it is expected that Gabriel Bortleto will soon receive approval.
As a result, current driver Bottas will no longer have a seat.
Rumors surrounding Bortleto gained momentum during the F1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, which took place over the weekend.
The driver from Brazil is presently at the top of the Formula 2 standings, although he
McLaren's team boss, Andrea Stella, emphasized that they wouldn't hinder his progress into Formula 1, slightly paving the way for a potential opportunity with Sauber.
Sauber has secured Nico Hulkenberg from Haas for the 2025 season.
Bottas seems to be observing the situation from a distance, not directly involved.
"When there isn't any confirmation, questions arise," he mentioned while in Brazil.
"The situation remains unchanged this weekend. I'm still on hold, waiting for them to make the next move."
"I believe I performed well in Mexico, and right now, I can't push this car any further to demonstrate my abilities. All I can do is be patient."
"I’m anticipating updates from the team and have consistently expressed my desire to join the Audi project. At the moment, I am still awaiting further information, and that's the current situation."
"In this sport, there's always uncertainty about what's going on behind the scenes."
"Politics often play a significant role when dealing with a large corporation and a substantial business."
"There are numerous factors that influence choices like the selection of drivers. At this point, I have to rely on the assurances of Audi's head, Mattia Binotto, and wait to see what unfolds."
At 35 years old, Bottas has secured 10 grand prix victories during his time with Mercedes in Formula 1.
However, his 12-year career in Formula 1 appears to be nearing its conclusion.
Bottas, along with his teammate Guanyu Zhou and former Williams racer Logan Sargeant, are the only competitors this season who have not managed to earn any points.

Alpine’s Stunning Double Podium in Brazil Poised to Net a $50M Prize Money Bonanza
Alpine F1 team's unexpected dual podium finish in Brazil may net them a $50 million bounty in winnings.
Alpine's unexpected dual podium finish at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix might lead to a potential $50 million earnings by the season's close in Formula 1.
Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly delivered outstanding performances under challenging, wet conditions in Brazil, securing an unexpected dual podium finish for Alpine by placing second and third, just behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The accumulation of 33 points propelled the French team up the constructors’ championship leaderboard, moving them from ninth to sixth place, surpassing Williams, RB, and Haas in the standings.
Alpine currently holds a lead of three points over Haas and is five points ahead of Red Bull, with three Grand Prix and a single sprint race left in this year's calendar. They are 37 points behind Aston Martin, who is in fifth place.
Should Alpine manage to secure the sixth position in the constructors' rankings by the end of the season, they could potentially earn up to $50 million in prize money, which is shared among the 10 teams, according to a Reuters report.
The unexpected outcome gave Alpine a critical lift during a challenging 2024 season, which began with them having the slowest car on the track.
"Following a challenging season, today was quite remarkable," Ocon expressed. "It's genuinely gratifying to navigate this track, especially with the rain evening out the performance."
Driving on dry conditions proved to be quite challenging, but I actually found comfort as the rain began to fall this morning… There's something about it raining here that I really enjoy. This day has delivered a unique racing experience for us.
Gasly, on his part, commented, "Scoring points has been a challenge for us, and under these circumstances, anything could happen," reflecting on their performance and mentioning his own achievement of securing two points by finishing seventh in the Saturday sprint.
"Nobody was convinced until it finally happened. Having both cars finish in the top three was something I doubt anyone predicted before the season began."
Oliver Oakes, the new team principal for Alpine, expressed that although it was somewhat disappointing not to have both vehicles advance to the final qualifying round, Q3, the team has significantly compensated for that setback since.
This squad is truly outstanding and always has been. Despite a challenging beginning to the season and a difficult period over the last year to year and a half that didn't reflect the team's true essence, I can confidently state that since my arrival, the team's strength has been undeniable, with the team's morale visibly high.
"The winter ahead looks promising, and this is exactly what we require to build some momentum."

Strategic Overrule: George Russell’s Pit Call Decision Before Red Flag at Sao Paulo GP
Mercedes made the final decision on a crucial pit stop for George Russell, despite his initial reservations, just before a race halt
"Then, Shov came on the line, essentially overriding what my engineer had advised, instructing me to pit. We operate collaboratively, aiming to make optimal choices quickly."
George Russell has acknowledged that his decision to pit right before the red flag was issued at the F1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix was overridden.
Russell was at the forefront during the initial half of the race at Interlagos, having moved ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris to take the lead.

As the situation on the track deteriorated, Russell and Norris opted for new intermediate tires, which resulted in Esteban Ocon taking over the front position in the race, surpassing Max Verstappen.
Due to low visibility, the Safety Car was brought out, which quickly led to a red flag situation following an accident involving Franco Colapinto.
This allowed Ocon, Verstappen, and Pierre Gasly to swap their tyres at no cost, gaining a key advantage in their track positioning.
Commenting on the choice to cease, Russell remarked in an interview with Motorsport Week, "Indeed, it was quite distressing, taking everything into account."
"The word was 'box.' I told them 'stay out.' Yet, 'box' was repeated, and again I insisted 'stay out.' But they repeated 'box' once more.
"I reiterated, 'I wish to remain outside'. Following that, for the final one, it's imperative to give it your all…
"Occasionally, it's essential to rely on your intuition. The last occasion I followed my instincts, things turned out quite favorably."
"Today, it's uncertain whether we could have clinched the race victory. However, had we not made a pit stop, we would have been at the forefront during the restart and dictating the speed for the initial 30 laps."
"With Lando supporting us, our speed on the straights was also impressive. At the very least, we could have secured second place."
Russell disclosed that Andrew Shovlin, the chief of trackside engineering for Mercedes, made the decision against his engineer's advice to switch to fresh tyres as the weather conditions deteriorated.
"He further mentioned that from the viewpoint of the team, it isn't clear in the slightest."
"From the pilot's perspective, it was evident that a red flag or Safety Car would be necessary due to the impossible driving conditions."
The downpour showed no signs of stopping. A massive, dark cloud loomed overhead.
"Following that, I got Shov to intervene, essentially overriding my engineer's decision, instructing me to 'box'. We're collaborating as a team, striving to make the optimal choices in the given moment.
"Obviously, the drivers who chose not to pit ended up taking the top three spots, while we were the highest finishers among those who did pit. From that perspective, I do feel a bit of gratification."

Verstappen and Ocon Earn Perfect Scores in Thrilling 2024 Sao Paulo GP Driver Ratings
Sao Paulo Grand Prix 2024 F1 Driver Evaluations: Pair of Racers Earn Top Marks of 10
Which competitors excelled during the weekend of the 2024 F1 Sao Paulo GP?
Max Verstappen – 10
Verstappen showcased his status as the premier driver in Formula 1 with an iconic showing at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Climbing from 17th place to win is an extraordinary achievement, highlighted by daring maneuvers to overtake competitors. His performance was befitting of a champion.
Esteban Ocon – 10
Ocon's prowess in damp conditions was astounding. He managed to distance himself from Verstappen twice before relinquishing the top position following the last Safety Car intervention. Despite Gasly outperforming him in the sprint, Ocon demonstrated exceptional skill in wet weather.

Pierre Gasly – 9.5
Despite a challenging qualifying round affected by the red flag's timing, Gasly had an impressive weekend at Interlagos. He earned points during the sprint and delivered a flawless performance in the Grand Prix, capitalizing on the red flag's timing to his advantage.
George Russell – 9
Considering the challenges posed by the W15 at Interlagos, Russell's Sunday drive was commendable. With a few changes in conditions, he was in a strong position to win the race.
Charles Leclerc – Rating: 8
Throughout the Interlagos event, both Leclerc and his team, Ferrari, seemed out of their element, struggling with performance regardless of the weather conditions. However, his daring move to pass both Russell and Norris during the restart after the final Safety Car incident stood out, securing him a commendable fifth place finish.
Lando Norris – 7
Norris's performance in Brazil is a clear example of why he's not yet at the level to clinch the championship. Despite his remarkable speed, he's prone to significant errors under stress. He surrendered the leading position to Russell right at the beginning and veered off track on two occasions in the course of the race.
Yuki Tsunoda – 8.5
Tsunoda thrived under the rainy conditions, achieving his highest-ever starting spot of third on the grid. The red flag's timing was less than perfect since VCARB had just made the switch to wet tires, a decision that appeared wise then. Nonetheless, it appeared that VCARB had a hard time keeping up with the speed of the Alpines.
Oscar Piastri – 6.5
Piastri had another weekend that didn't meet expectations. Despite being in a position to secure a victory in the sprint if not for directives from his team, a significant error on his last lap in Q3 of the Grand Prix qualifying set him back. He struggled to bounce back from this setback. Additionally, he was given a 10-second penalty due to a collision with Lawson that could have been avoided.
Liam Lawson – 7.5
In the dry conditions, Lawson appeared to have an advantage over Tsunoda, showcasing better control during the sprint race. Considering his limited experience, his slower speed in wet conditions was expected. Despite this, he successfully held off Hamilton and Perez for a considerable stretch of the race.
Lewis Hamilton – 4.5
Hamilton's underwhelming performance in the 2024 season persisted at the Interlagos circuit. Throughout the event, he struggled to compete, including in rainy conditions, which have typically been his strong suit.
Sergio Perez – 4.5
Perez experienced another weekend that fell short of expectations. He did not advance to the final round of qualifying in either session and was unable to add any points to his tally.
Oliver Bearman – 6.5
Bearman has been consistently exceeding expectations, managing to surpass his experienced team member Hulkenberg in qualifying rounds. However, both he and his team, Haas, faced challenges during the rainy conditions. Bearman's inexperience was evident when he lost control and spun twice, also colliding with Williams' Colapinto.
Valtteri Bottas – 7.5
Bottas shone during the qualifying rounds, barely failing to make it into Q3. However, a sluggish start due to insufficient tire warmth saw him fall back in the standings, ultimately placing 13th in the race.
Fernando Alonso – 6.5
It was a challenging weekend for Alonso and his team, Aston Martin, who appeared to have the least competitive vehicle on the Interlagos track.
Zhou Guanyu – 5.5
Zhou had yet another unremarkable outing in Brazil, lagging behind in qualifying by more than a second in each session. He ended up at the back of the pack on race day.
Carlos Sainz – 4
Following an exceptional display in Mexico where Sainz delivered a flawless performance, the scene drastically changed this weekend. The Spanish driver found himself lagging in the sprint, compounded by two collisions on Sunday. Certainly, a weekend he'd rather erase from memory.
Williams and Colapinto faced a challenging weekend, with Colapinto experiencing two crashes on Sunday. Similar to the event in Mexico, he seemed to lag behind his teammate Albon in speed.
Alex Albon – 4
Albon will certainly regret his Q3 crash. Had it not occurred, he stood a strong chance of battling for a top three position, positioning him alongside the Alpines and Tsunoda during the race.
Lance Stroll – 3
Stroll's race was derailed by a rookie error during the formation lap, as he miscalculated his move to get back on the circuit, leaving his Aston Martin stranded in the gravel trap.
Nico Hulkenberg – 4
Hulkenberg had a disappointing weekend, characterized by unusual errors and a performance that fell short of Bearman's.
