Liam Lawson Targets Red Bull Seat: A Showdown with Tsunoda for 2025 F1 Promotion Amid Uncertainty Over Verstappen’s Teammate
Liam Lawson details Red Bull objectives, eyeing a potential 2025 Formula 1 advancement
"The aim or objective that's been established remains unchanged from when I first entered the program at 17."
Liam Lawson has disclosed that Red Bull anticipates he will be in direct contention with Yuki Tsunoda. The competition between them is aimed at catching the attention of the higher-ups as they vie for a potential advancement in the 2025 Formula One season.
Who will be teaming up with Max Verstappen in 2025 remains uncertain, even though Sergio Perez is secured with a contract for the upcoming year.
Over the past month since the Singapore event, Red Bull's consultant Helmut Marko has expressed a strong preference for a junior driver to partner with Verstappen for the upcoming season.
Lawson stepping in for Daniel Ricciardo for the last six races provides Red Bull with a chance to assess the New Zealander's performance next to Tsunoda.
Should Lawson excel, there's a chance he might join Verstappen at Red Bull in the upcoming year.
Red Bull has persistently ignored Tsunoda's achievements, even though he has surpassed the performances of both Nyck de Vries and Ricciardo in the past year and a half.
During the FIA press briefing in Austin, Lawson detailed the anticipations of Red Bull.
"Honestly, I believe that's quite a long way off," he remarked when questioned about the potential of driving for Red Bull next year.
"The objective or aim that was established remains unchanged from when I was 17 years old and became a part of the program.
"The evaluation is primarily focused on performance, and that's the main criterion they'll be employing. Over the past few years, particularly this year, Yuki has excelled remarkably. He serves as the standard for comparison since he's the only other person driving the same car as I am."
"It seems I'll be measured against him directly. It appears that their aim or hope for me is to be in competition with him."
"Regarding my positioning for the upcoming year or beyond, I am totally unsure. That's the goal that has been established."
Lawson aims to assist RB in clinching the sixth position in the F1 constructors’ standings, surpassing Haas in the near future.
He further stated, "In my view, it's not merely about a specific position or declaring a preferred spot. Primarily, it's about earning points for my own benefit, since that's the criterion the team will use to assess my performance."
"The optimal strategy is to accumulate points. Additionally, competing for sixth place in the championship is a priority. Essentially, my aim is to secure points at the earliest opportunity."
