Liam Lawson Opens Up About Emotional Exchange with Daniel Ricciardo Amid Red Bull Driver Swap
Liam Lawson shares insights on his discussion with Daniel Ricciardo after Red Bull made their decision. During the weekend in Singapore, Lawson explained the exchange he had with Ricciardo.
Liam Lawson commended Daniel Ricciardo for his approach to the Red Bull driver exchange during a conversation about the circumstances at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Although it wasn't officially revealed over the Singapore weekend, there were clear indications from Red Bull that Liam Lawson would take over Ricciardo's position starting with the following race.
As a result, the Australian was not given a formal farewell.
In several interviews following the race, Ricciardo appeared quite emotional while speaking with reporters.
Lawson is set to compete for RB with Yuki Tsunoda in the last six races of the year. He aims to make a strong impression on Red Bull in hopes of securing a chance to join the main team in 2025.
In a discussion with Formula 1, Lawson shared memories of a chat he had with Ricciardo over the Singapore weekend.
"Fortunately, he's an excellent person," Lawson remarked. "He understood that it wasn't related to me. That's likely been Daniel's attitude throughout this entire situation we've found ourselves in."
"Throughout the past year, it hasn't really seemed like we were directly competing with one another, even though we're all involved in the sport in some capacity."
With Daniel, it never truly seemed that way. He consistently treated me well and was always willing to offer guidance when I was behind the wheel. Throughout the year, he helped me in every possible manner.
"It never seemed like we were directly competing for the same position. We were also at distinct stages in our careers, which likely contributed to that feeling."
Lawson also shared a significant detail from their discussion and mentioned what Ricciardo had expressed.
Lawson mentioned that he visited to express his apologies for the entire ordeal, acknowledging that it was an unpleasant experience and expressing regret that the person had to endure it.
"He mentioned that there were clearly no issues with me, and advised, 'You have one chance at Formula 1, so be sure to seize it.' Then, he wished me good luck."
It seems improbable that Ricciardo will make a comeback to Formula 1 following his departure from Red Bull.
The driver, who has won eight grand prix races, doesn't have any opportunities lined up for the coming year and has expressed a desire to compete in Formula 1 only if he can be at the forefront.
