Liam Lawson Focuses on Present Performance Amid Speculation of Red Bull 2025 F1 Seat
Liam Lawson asserts that the possibility of advancing to Red Bull's main team for the 2025 Formula 1 season is not something he's considering.
Liam Lawson states that the chance of obtaining a seat with Red Bull's F1 team in 2025 is "not something I'm considering," as his focus is on landing a permanent racing position.
The 22-year-old from New Zealand will make a season-ending appearance for Red Bull's junior team, stepping in for the ousted Daniel Ricciardo for the final six races of the year.
Red Bull has not yet announced who will join Yuki Tsunoda at RB for the upcoming season, but Lawson is the frontrunner for the full-time driving position. Additionally, he has an opportunity to position himself as a possible successor to Sergio Perez in the main team.
However, Lawson makes it clear that the possibility of racing for Red Bull is not on his mind at the moment.
"Lawson mentioned on the F1 Nation podcast that although it's not constantly on his mind, he's conscious of the fact that performing well in Red Bull Racing's sister team could potentially lead to a future with Red Bull."
"I aim to join Red Bull Racing down the line, and I'm aware that they, too, are scouting for future talent for when Max or Checo move on. They're always in need of prepared drivers for such eventualities."
"I understand that my prospects hinge on my performance. As for when my future will take shape, I'm not dwelling on it, knowing it's entirely contingent on my success in my present role."
In a recent appearance on the same podcast, Christian Horner, the team principal for Red Bull, hinted that Lawson could position himself as a potential teammate for Max Verstappen, possibly as soon as 2025.
"Horner pointed out that the scope extends past VCARB to include Red Bull Racing as well. He noted, “Clearly, we have an agreement with Sergio for the upcoming year, but it's crucial to always be looking ahead and considering future possibilities.”
Lawson disclosed Red Bull's expectations for him in the concluding rounds of 2024.
"In essence, the team's objective for me is to achieve, if not exceed, Yuki's level of performance. They are looking for me to equal his results and effectively score points," he stated.
Clearly, the crew is contending for the sixth position in the Constructors' Championship, which holds significant value for VCARB. Therefore, the primary objective is to accumulate points.
"If we're tallying up our successes, I believe that signifies we're performing well. That's essentially the goal we're aiming for. However, we're continually under assessment."
