Lewis Hamilton Praises Red Bull’s Innovation Amid ‘Bib’ Device Controversy as F1 Rivals React
Lewis Hamilton stands up for Red Bull as 'top innovators' amidst dispute
Lewis Hamilton praises Red Bull as the forefront of F1 innovation during the debate over their 'bib' apparatus.
Lewis Hamilton seems to have shown support for F1 competitors Red Bull in the midst of the controversy over their debated ride-height mechanism.
New disputes have surrounded Red Bull leading into this weekend's United States Grand Prix, following allegations from competing teams that they possess a mechanism capable of adjusting their car's ride height even under parc ferme conditions.
Ahead of the Austin Grand Prix, Red Bull announced they have altered their vehicle after discussions with the FIA, Formula 1's regulatory authority.
Red Bull acknowledged the existence of the so-called 'bib' or 'tea-tray' mechanism but maintained that their actions were completely above board, emphasizing that the device becomes unreachable once the car is completely put together and prepared for action.
When queried about his opinion, the seven-time world champion Hamilton stated that while pushing the limits of innovation is a traditional aspect of F1, he believes there needs to be stricter enforcement.
"I only became aware of it right before my arrival. However, I believe innovation is at the core of our sport. Red Bull has been at the forefront, leading the way with their innovations," Hamilton shared with Sky Sports F1.
"In the end, all teams scrutinize the regulations, aiming to discover ways to optimize their advantage, even if it means slightly pushing the boundaries. The key is to keep evolving and ensure stricter enforcement."
Ultimately, they performed more effectively. It's uncertain how long they've possessed that advantage, during which they've secured numerous titles. Perhaps that era is coming to an end… However, I doubt that this alone will halt their success.
"However, I believe the rest of us must persist in being pioneers and trailblazers instead of merely attempting to follow suit."
Heading into the last six races with a 52-point lead over McLaren's Lando Norris, championship frontrunner Max Verstappen stated that the adjustments would have no impact on Red Bull's showing.
"The tool was simply convenient for us. Adjustments were straightforward when the components were separate. However, once the entire vehicle is assembled, it becomes untouchable. Therefore, it makes no difference to us," stated the individual from the Netherlands.
"While going through it, my mind wandered to other groups possibly employing this method. However, to my surprise, I learned it was connected to our own team. It never came up in our discussions; it simply appeared to be a more convenient instrument for making adjustments."
Norris alongside his McLaren colleague, Oscar Piastri, shared a divergent viewpoint, both characterizing the apparatus as an undeniable violation of F1 regulations.
"Norris mentioned that there’s a clear distinction between straightforward matters and the nuances of challenging the status quo. He highlighted the importance of distinguishing between pushing limits and pioneering new areas within the permissible scope of innovation."
"I believe that we at McLaren have excelled in that aspect, but we're careful not to exceed those boundaries."
