Jorge Lorenzo Reflects on Rivalry with Marc Marquez and Ducati’s Future Prospects in MotoGP

Jorge Lorenzo expressed disapproval of Marc Marquez's approach to MotoGP racing

Triple MotoGP winner discusses his time with Ducati and looks ahead to 2025

Jorge Lorenzo has stated that he was not in agreement with Marc Marquez's racing style when Marquez entered the MotoGP scene in 2013.

In 2023, Ducati is set to present what could be its most formidable official team ever, featuring the two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia alongside Marc Marquez.

In the initial stages of Marquez's MotoGP career, he and Lorenzo were fierce competitors, and Lorenzo was disturbed by Marquez's approach to racing at that time.

As 2025 approaches, Lorenzo predicts that the competition between Marquez and Bagnaia will kick off on an even footing.

"He mentioned at the Festival dello Sport in Italy that, due to various factors, it's going to be a competition that begins on a level playing field."

Back in 2013, I couldn't condone his racing style, which leaned heavily into aggression. Today, he demonstrates a greater level of respect for his competitors.

It's important to note that regulations have become more stringent compared to a decade ago.

"On the athletic field, he's an absolute powerhouse. However, since 2010, his physical health has been incredibly unfortunate."

"Had it not been for those issues, he could have secured an additional two to three world titles."

Lorenzo believes he could have secured the championship with Ducati

At the age of 37, after starting his MotoGP career with Yamaha in 2008 and clinching all his top-tier championships there, he transitioned to the official Ducati team in 2017.

Following a modest initial season with only three top-three finishes, Lorenzo's departure from Ducati by the end of 2018 was confirmed right as he began to achieve victory with the Desmosedici during that year's Italian Grand Prix.

Lorenzo secured three victories riding for Ducati until an injury shortened his season, leading to an unsuccessful stint with Honda in 2019, after which he decided to retire from the sport.

"Lorenzo stated, 'Currently, it's the top bicycle; it doesn't have any flaws.'"

"In 2004, during my final season in the 125cc category, Gigi Dall’Igna, the general manager, and I came into contact."

Destiny played its part in uniting us at Ducati. It was a deep regret for me not to secure a championship with the Italian company.

"I firmly believe that, had I remained for an additional two years, we would have secured the victory."

For the 2019 season, Danilo Petrucci took over Lorenzo's spot and secured two grand prix victories with Ducati over a span of two years.
