Jorge Lorenzo Reflects on Marquez Rivalry and Missed Ducati Title Opportunities as 2025 MotoGP Showdown Looms

Jorge Lorenzo was not on board with Marc Marquez's approach to riding in MotoGP

The three-time MotoGP champion discusses Ducati and looks ahead to 2025

Jorge Lorenzo expressed that he "didn't agree with" Marc Marquez's approach to racing when Marquez entered MotoGP in 2013.

In the upcoming year, Ducati is set to present what could be considered its most formidable factory team to date, featuring the current two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia alongside Marc Marquez.

In the early stages of Marquez's MotoGP career, he and Lorenzo shared a fierce rivalry, largely due to Marquez's riding techniques, which frustrated Lorenzo.

As we approach 2025, Lorenzo anticipates that the competition between Marquez and Bagnaia will begin on an even footing.

During the Festival dello Sport in Italy, he mentioned that, for various reasons, the challenge will begin on an even playing field.

Back in 2013, I wasn't in favor of his aggressive racing style. These days, he shows more respect to his competitors.

"It's important to note that the regulations are more stringent now compared to a decade ago."

"On the athletic front, he is incredibly formidable. Unfortunately, starting in 2010, he has experienced significant misfortune with his health."

"If he hadn't faced those issues, he likely would have secured two or three additional world championships."

Lorenzo is confident he could have claimed the championship with Ducati. At 37, he transitioned from Yamaha in 2017, a team where he began his MotoGP career in 2008 and secured all his top-tier titles, to join the factory Ducati team.

After a challenging first season where he secured only three podium finishes, Lorenzo was set to depart from Ducati at the conclusion of the 2018 season. This announcement came right as he found success by winning races on the Desmosedici, beginning with a victory at the Italian Grand Prix that year.

Lorenzo secured three victories riding for Ducati, but his season was cut short due to an injury. In 2019, he made an unsuccessful switch to Honda, and subsequently, he retired from the sport.

Lorenzo mentioned that the bike is now the top choice, with no flaws whatsoever.

"In 2004, during my final year competing in the 125cc class, I crossed paths with general manager Gigi Dall’Igna for the first time."

Destiny united us at Ducati, and I deeply regret not having secured a championship with the Italian company.

"I firmly believe that if I had remained for another two years, we would have achieved victory."

In the 2019 season, Danilo Petrucci took over from Lorenzo, achieving victories in two grand prix races while riding for Ducati over the span of two years.
