Context
The award, backed by the European Parliament, honors Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese journalist and blogger who was murdered in October 2017. Each year, it recognizes exceptional journalism that upholds or champions the fundamental principles and values of the European Union, including human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and human rights.
The competition welcomes submissions from professional journalists or groups of journalists from any country, provided their detailed stories have been published or aired by a media organization located in one of the 27 EU member countries. Between May 3 and July 31, 2024, journalists from across these EU nations submitted over 300 entries for this fourth installment of the Prize.
The award and its accompanying €20,000 cash prize highlight the European Parliament's firm commitment to supporting investigative journalism and ensuring the safety of journalists globally.
