Hong Kong’s Strategic Move: Transforming into International Education Hub and Boosting Student Housing Market
The 'Learning in Hong Kong' initiative aims to increase the need for student accommodation. The CEO commits to transforming Hong Kong into a global center for tertiary education, setting aside more than 80 hectares of land for a university city.
The chief of Hong Kong has also introduced strategies to boost the availability of student housing. He urges the private sector to transform hotels and commercial structures into student residences via self-funding and private projects.
Kathy Lee, the lead researcher at Colliers, predicts that the international student population in Hong Kong will continue to grow as the city advances as a global education center. She advises that the government should meticulously evaluate land allocation and planning permissions in these regions to guarantee there's enough accommodation for the expected surge of students and professionals.
The proposed easing of the authorization procedure for building conversions is also anticipated to boost market availability, mitigating the existing scarcity and propelling the expansion of this budding market.
