Henna Virkkunen Outlines Vision for EU’s Digital Future in Key Hearing
Discussion with Executive Vice-President Nominee Henna Virkkunen
Spread the word:
On Tuesday night, members of the Industry and Internal Market Committees interviewed Henna Virkkunen, the Finnish nominee for the role overseeing Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy.
In her opening remarks, Henna Virkkunen expressed her commitment to enhancing the European Union's autonomy in the digital realm, fortifying the security of essential digital infrastructure, and boosting competitiveness. She outlined her strategies to advance innovation and funding in cutting-edge technologies, guarantee a secure and equitable online environment, bridge the digital skills divide, streamline regulatory processes, and amplify research investment.
Independence and protection in technology
The nominated Commissioner pledged to bolster both investment and innovation in the realm of cyber defense, aiming to safeguard the EU's vital infrastructure against hybrid threats. Ms. Virkkunen backed the concept of establishing a genuine defense union and highlighted the necessity of collaborative investments, with further information anticipated in a forthcoming defense white paper. She announced that a cybersecurity action plan will be unveiled shortly and emphasized that member states must thoroughly implement current cybersecurity regulations and enhance the security of crucial infrastructure.
When discussing the EU's goal to enhance its technological self-reliance, particularly in cloud services, Ms. Virkkunen outlined her commitment to drawing researchers to Europe, boosting private sector funding, and improving the skills of professionals. This is part of a larger plan aimed at achieving the EU's digital decade goals and providing secure, high-speed internet access. She noted that the digital networks act would streamline processes and guarantee fast internet for everyone, while the cloud and AI development act is designed to increase investments in cloud infrastructure for businesses. Additional key areas she highlighted include expanding semiconductor manufacturing within the EU, advancing the EU Space industrial strategy, and developing quantum computing capabilities.
Backing the shift to digital technology
Regarding artificial intelligence, Ms. Virkkunen promised to quickly put the AI Act into action. To position Europe as "the AI continent" capable of drawing top talent, she plans to introduce an AI factories initiative within her first 100 days in office. Additionally, she aims to draft a cloud and AI development act to encourage energy-efficient computing, expand business capabilities, and drive innovation. Enhancing industrial applications of AI will be a key focus, she mentioned when asked about AI’s ability to enhance services such as healthcare.
Numerous Members of the European Parliament raised concerns about how the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA) will be enforced, focusing on issues like the negative impact of social media, safeguarding online freedom of speech, and preventing the sale of illegal goods from other countries. Ms. Virkkunen emphasized that one of her main goals is to ensure children's safety on the internet. She promised to introduce a plan to combat cyberbullying and to examine widespread dangers, such as algorithms that can lead to addiction. She clarified that the DSA's purpose is to eliminate unlawful content and give users the power to protect their rights online. She also underscored the importance of collaborating with allies on digital policy and pointed out that digital regulations are applicable to any company wishing to do business within the EU.
Ms. Virkkunen responded to questions from Members of the European Parliament regarding freedom of expression and basic rights. She emphasized the forthcoming Democracy Shield initiative, stressed the necessity of combating foreign meddling and false information, and underlined the significance of having a diverse media landscape.
The complete video of the hearing is available for viewing here. Following the hearing, Ms. Virkkunen addressed the media outside the meeting room, and that can be watched here.
Upcoming Actions
The leaders and political coordinators of both committees will convene promptly to evaluate the qualifications and performance of the person nominated for the role of Executive Vice-President.
Following the suggestions made by the committee, the Conference of Presidents, including EP President Metsola and the leaders of political groups, is scheduled to carry out the concluding assessment and officially conclude the hearings on November 21. After the Conference of Presidents finalizes the closure of all hearings, the evaluation letters will be made public.
Members of the European Parliament are set to vote on the complete group of Commissioners, requiring a majority of votes in a roll-call format. This election is planned for the plenary session in Strasbourg, happening from November 25 to 28.

Welsh First Minister Expects Boost in Rail Funding Amid HS2 Controversy
Welsh First Minister anticipates an increase in railway funding from the UK government, criticizes the disproportionate HS2 allocations
Eluned Morgan, who took over as the leader of Welsh Labour last summer following an uncontested election succeeding Vaughan Gething, has been actively lobbying her party counterpart Keir Starmer for enhanced rail investment, she revealed to Sky News.

The premier of Wales has announced anticipation of additional funds from the prime minister for the nation's rail infrastructure.
In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Eluned Morgan criticized HS2 for being "unfair" and expressed her anticipation for improvements in rail infrastructure and funding.
A source from the UK government indicated that upcoming announcements regarding transportation policies in Wales are expected soon, emphasizing that this matter will be a focal point in the upcoming spring budget review.
According to the source, the government is taking steps to address the longstanding issue of insufficient funding for Welsh rail, which has been worsened by the HS2 project.
The premier expressed her desire for increased financial support prior to the upcoming Senedd elections in May, although it remains uncertain how much funding Sir Keir Starmer intends to allocate to his associates in Wales.
The previous Conservative administration had classified the HS2 project, which has no scheduled routes passing through Wales, as a venture shared between England and Wales.
This implied that Wales did not receive any financial support, unlike the regional administrations in Scotland and Northern Ireland, which were allocated extra funds despite not participating in the project.
Every political group in the Welsh Parliament has united in demanding additional funds for the HS2 project for Wales.
In her initial conversation with Sky News since assuming her role, Ms. Morgan described the existing circumstances as "completely inappropriate, inequitable, and unwarranted."
She stated, "It's essential that we receive our portion of the funds. Our portion has not been allocated to us yet."
For optimal video playback, it is recommended to use the Chrome browser.
Earlier assessments indicated that Wales was entitled to an additional £4 billion in funding. However, newer estimates from the Welsh government propose that the actual amount might be approximately £350 million.
Plaid Cymru has accused the UK Labour Party of being inconsistent in their stance regarding the funding for HS2.
In 2022, Jo Stevens, who was the shadow secretary for Wales at the time, criticized the Conservative government for failing to provide compensation to Wales, labeling the decision to categorize the project as an England and Wales initiative as "completely illogical."
During her campaign, Ms. Stevens stated that the funds were not available for the HS2 project.

The premier implied that she has been influencing the prime minister in private discussions.
She stated: "Whenever I encounter Keir Starmer, I request our portion of the funds. Thus, I will advocate for Wales at every possible chance.
"I will also seize the opportunity presented by having a government in Westminster of the same political alignment that has begun to increase funding for public services."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is currently under scrutiny regarding her ability to adhere to the fiscal guidelines established in last year's budget. These rules mandate that government borrowing should be for investment purposes only, not for routine expenses.

Teachers Urged Not to Strike Over 2.8% Pay Offer as Union Ballots for Action Amid Recruitment Concerns
Educators advised that now is not the 'appropriate moment for industrial action' while union polls members on a 2.8% salary proposal.
The National Education Union has declared the proposal "inadequate" for tackling issues related to hiring and keeping staff.
Political correspondent @alexrogerssky
Friday, January 10, 2025, 11:
Educators have been advised that "now is not the appropriate moment for a strike," following the announcement by the biggest teachers' union of its intention to encourage its members to decline the government's proposed salary increase.
The National Education Union (NEU) is set to begin a preliminary vote among its members from March 1 to April 11 regarding the government's proposed 2.8% salary increase for teachers in England.
In a conversation with Anna Jones on Sky News Breakfast, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy appealed to teachers to refrain from striking, stating that the current Labour administration has implemented "more measures than the Conservative government did over the past 14 years."
Latest in Politics: Despite facing significant pressure to call off the visit, Reeves is set to travel to China for
Addressing educators, she stated, "I understand that recent years have been extremely challenging, but I encourage you to consider that within just six months, we have implemented more measures than the Conservative government did in the past 14 years.
"We have presented a salary proposal to enhance their quality of life."
"Furthermore, in discussions with educators nationwide, including those at my own child’s school, the prevailing sentiment is a desire to alleviate the burdens on teachers. This would enable them to focus primarily on their fundamental role of instruction, and attend to the needs of their students, especially those from the post-COVID generation who face numerous obstacles."
"I want to acknowledge the challenges our educators have faced and emphasize the importance of collaboration for the benefit of our students. Together, I believe we can find effective solutions."
"This is not the moment for confrontation. This is the moment to advance."
The possibility of teacher strikes looms following the government's proposal of a 2.8% salary increase for public sector employees, a figure that has faced criticism from some NHS workers.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) described the amount as "barely £2 more per day" and called on the government to initiate discussions to "prevent additional disturbances and votes."
In September of last year, the Aslef union, representing train drivers, agreed to the government's proposal, which included a retroactive salary increase of 5% for 2022-23, followed by raises of 4.75% for 2023-24 and 4.5% for 2024-25.
Members of the RMT union, which advocates for rail employees, agreed to a one-year wage increase of 4.5% at Network Rail. Additionally, they secured raises at train operating companies, with a 4.75% increase for the previous year and a 4.5% raise for the years 2024/25.
In September of the previous year, educators and principals across England were granted a 5.5% salary increase.
Daniel Kebede, the chief of the NEU, has stated that the government's proposed 2.8% increase for the 2025/26 period falls short of what is needed to tackle the lack of teachers.
"He stated that the proposed 2.8% increase falls short of what is needed to begin tackling the recruitment and retention crisis."
The idea that a pay increase without allocated funds can be covered through 'efficiencies' is offensive to a profession that has already suffered through 14 years of budget cuts.
"No educator or manager can pinpoint areas to optimize without reducing personnel, resources, or both."
He stated: "Numerous educators supported the educational reforms that the Labour Party pledged. They committed to funding education, hiring 6,500 new teachers, prioritizing educational quality, and enhancing the future prospects of our children."
"It's essential that their dedication is evident in actions, not just in statements.
"Simply relying on feelings won't address the significant shortage of teachers, nor will it ensure the top-tier education that our children need."
The Department for Education (DfE) sharply criticized the union's choice, labeling it as "extraordinary." Similarly, officials from Downing Street appealed to teachers not to jeopardize students' education by participating in strikes.
The Department for Education stated that an increase of 2.8% in salaries would "preserve the attractiveness of teachers' compensation in the face of the difficult economic conditions confronting the government."
A spokesperson from the Department for Education commented, "This decision is remarkable.
Over the past three years, educators have received a total salary raise exceeding 17%.
"Amid ongoing efforts by schools and families to boost attendance, following the significant number of school days missed due to the pandemic and recent strikes, it's crucial for union leaders to carefully consider whose priorities they are truly serving."

Sikh Disappointment: Labour’s Silence on Promised Inquiry Into 1984 Golden Temple Massacre Raises Concerns
Sikh organization expresses dissatisfaction with Labour Party's lack of response on investigating the 1984 Golden Temple incident, despite Keir Starmer's earlier assurances. In 1984, a significant number of individuals lost their lives when the Indian army stormed a Sikh temple that had become a shelter for separatists. Activists are pushing for an investigation to explore possible connections between the British and Indian governments before the incident occurred.

Friday, January 10, 2025, 3:
A Sikh organization has expressed its disappointment following the Labour Party's decision not to initiate an investigation into possible connections between the UK and the killing of numerous Sikhs at the Golden Temple in India in 1984.
According to a document obtained by Sky News, the Sikh Federation has informed Foreign Secretary David Lammy that they have reached out to him five times since the Labour Party assumed power, without receiving any responses.
In 2022, Sir Keir Starmer sent a letter to the Sikh community pledging that a Labour-led government would initiate an independent investigation into the UK's military involvement in the 1984 assault by the Indian army on the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Latest in Politics: Reeves Heads to China for Financial Discussions
By 1984, there was growing support for the creation of an independent Sikh nation, a movement that ultimately escalated into violence.
The government responded to this armed rebellion with a harsh crackdown.
In 2014, it inadvertently came to light that the UK government might have had connections to the assault on the Golden Temple.
Operation Blue Star
In June 1984, during Operation Blue Star, Indian military units entered the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the most sacred site in Sikhism, to remove separatists who were holed up inside.
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a prominent Sikh leader known for his militant activism and support for an independent Sikh homeland, was among the many fatalities. Sikh organizations contend that the actual death toll reached into the thousands.
Several months after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi authorized an assault on the temple, she was killed by two of her Sikh bodyguards, who were seeking retribution.
In 2014, unintentionally disclosed documents revealed that Margaret Thatcher knew about plans by the Indian government to storm the temple, and in the lead-up to the assault, an officer from the British SAS had offered guidance to India.
Former Prime Minister David Cameron requested that civil servant Jeremy Heywood carry out an inquiry.
Mr. Cameron subsequently stated, "Approximately four months prior to the incident, following a request from the Indian government, a UK military officer offered some guidance. However, it's important to note that this guidance was not adhered to, and the incident was isolated."
He further stated, "There is absolutely no proof that the UK government participated directly in the operation."

Accusation of concealment
The Sikh Federation has previously charged the government with concealing information and has been demanding an inquiry led by a judge.
In a letter addressed to David Lammy on Friday, Dabinderjit Singh, the chief executive of the Sikh Federation, expressed his concern stating, "Labour has held power for more than six months, yet there has been complete silence" regarding the investigation "that Labour has pledged to initiate for the past decade."
He further emphasized that even though they have dispatched five letters to Mr. Lammy, there has been no preliminary response regarding the potential inquiry, which, according to guidelines, should have been provided.
The request for an investigation followed a call from Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, the Labour MP and chair of the defence select committee, who also expressed the need for one.

Defiant Farage Clashes With Musk Over Leadership Amid Internal Party Strife and Devolution Controversy
Nigel Farage maintains that he remains impervious to being coerced or intimidated, even after Elon Musk suggested that the Reform Party would benefit from a change in leadership. Farage affirmed that his friendship with Musk persists, despite their differing views on far-right figure Tommy Robinson.

Nigel Farage declared to Sky News that he is impervious to coercion or intimidation by anyone, following Elon Musk's comment that the Reform MP lacks the necessary qualities to head his party.
During a discussion with Sky's political reporter Ali Fortescue, Mr. Farage revealed that he had communicated with the billionaire proprietor of X following his disparaging remarks on January 5th, where Mr. Musk stated, "The Reform Party requires a fresh leader. Farage lacks the necessary qualities."
Latest in Politics: Reeves Lands in China to Discuss Economy
When questioned about their friendship, Mr. Farage responded, "Absolutely, we're friends. He simply speaks his mind whenever he feels like it."
He also mentioned that he has communicated with Mr. Musk but did not share the details of their conversation.
"Mr. Farage mentioned that while he received numerous supportive comments, there was one remark that wasn't supportive. 'That's just the way it is,' he said."
When questioned about his hesitance to critique the technology entrepreneur, the Member of Parliament for Clacton stated it was actually "the opposite," explaining that he openly opposed Mr. Musk regarding his opinions on the far-right figure Tommy Robinson.
Mr. Farage stated, "What he [Musk] expressed on the internet was essentially that Tommy Robinson was a political prisoner, which I do not agree with."
Had I agreed to that, he wouldn't have posted a tweet criticizing me.
"Just so you know, no one can coerce, intimidate, or force me to alter my stance."
"I hold firm to my convictions."
Mr. Musk has shown support for Robinson, asserting that he is honest about the existence of grooming gangs. He expressed his support on X by stating, "Free Tommy Robinson."
Mr. Farage stated that Robinson, currently incarcerated for an 18-month period due to contempt of court charges, is not permitted to join Reform UK, nor are those who support him.
He stated: "If individuals in Reform believe that Tommy Robinson ought to be a member and take on a key position within Reform, then our disagreement is completely fundamental.
"I have always avoided collaborating with individuals involved in the BNP. Over the past ten years of my intermittent political involvement, I have consistently expressed this stance. That is where our opinions diverge."
Despite their differences, Mr. Farage expressed his belief that Mr. Musk will maintain his support for Reform and might still contribute financially to the party.
The business mogul has expressed favorable opinions about Reform UK in the past, and there are indications that he might contribute several million pounds to support the party.

Local uproar as Reform party council members resign
Mr. Farage addressed the audience at the Reform Party's South East of England Conference, an event part of a series designed to strengthen the party’s regional support networks.
Moments before he was set to deliver a speech to the assembly, news broke that ten Reform council members had resigned, citing dissatisfaction with Mr. Farage's leadership.
The announcement from the Amber Valley organization in Derbyshire expressed that Reform has been behaving in a more authoritarian way and has veered off course, concentrating on attracting ex-Tory councillors instead of engaging with the grassroots supporters.
"The statement highlighted serious worries due to the party's departure from its original principles and values."

Reform UK's chairman, Zia Yusuf, announced on X that Alex Stevenson, the leader of the rebel faction, has been suspended for endorsing candidates in December who did not pass the vetting process.
He stated that most of the individuals who resigned with Mr. Stevenson were essentially "unauthorized," necessitating new elections.
Mr. Stevenson told Sky News that his suspension was a result of a dispute within the party.
The dispute could create difficulties for Mr. Farage as he looks to make advances in the upcoming local elections in May.
Plans for devolution labeled as 'rejection of democratic principles'
During his recent discussion on Sky News, Mr. Farage sharply criticized the Labour government's proposals on devolution, which might result in the delay of certain elections scheduled for May.
This would be relevant when local councils request approval to restructure, allowing smaller district authorities to combine with adjacent ones to increase their influence over the region.
Mr. Farage argued that the proposals are not focused on devolving power but rather on "the cancellation of elections."
"He commented, 'I believed that only dictators had the power to call off elections. It’s astounding, and they’re claiming restructuring of local governance as the justification.'"
He asserted that councils under Conservative control are seizing it eagerly, as if it were a lifeline, due to concerns about losing seats to the Reform Party.
"He completely rejects the notion of democracy," he further stated.

Elon Musk’s Attacks on Jess Phillips Ignite Political Firestorm Over Grooming Gang Debate
Elon Musk's attacks on Jess Phillips have turned genuine victims into pawns in a political game
In an interview with Sky News, Jess Phillips dismissed Elon Musk's accusations as "absurd" and declared her refusal to be silenced.
Political correspondent @BethRigby
Thursday, January 9, 2025, 01:
The recent treatment of Jess Phillips highlights the pervasive issue of misogyny, abuse, and violence that continues to afflict women and girls in our society.
The former activist for domestic violence, now a politician, who has dedicated her career to advocating for victims, has recently become the target of widespread abuse, endangering her safety over the past week.
During challenging times, she has questioned if she should permanently step away from prominent political roles and return to the women's shelters, where she initially started assisting at-risk women and girls.
Phillips, known for her vocal advocacy in women's issues, has consistently been a focal point of controversy.
When the wealthiest individual on the planet, who manages a social media channel followed by 211 million people, begins to mock you by labeling you as an "apologist for rape and genocide" — implicated in what he alleges to be a concealment of profoundly horrific and vile misconduct — this represents a uniquely serious level of focus and peril.
This week, the woman lawmaker tasked with defending the real victims of these heinous acts faced a barrage of harassment and threats.

Phillips conveyed to me that the barrage of tweets left her feeling physically ill and pursued, describing the experience as truly dreadful.

The controversy surrounding grooming gangs: Politicians targeted by Elon Musk's criticism
According to Jess Phillips, grooming gangs exist across the entire nation.
Analysis by Sky News reveals that accounts on X with right-wing leanings influenced Elon Musk's engagement with the grooming gangs controversy.
Associated Themes:
While the public was quick to express their anger and disapproval, what became of the perspectives of the direct victims involved?
The issue of grooming gangs and the abuse, sexual assault, and torment of young victims has become intensely combative and loud, transforming into a political arena dominated by blame-shifting and competitive scoring.
Consider being someone who has endured grooming, rape, or torture, and now your personal suffering is being casually discussed by others. Having been failed in the past, what would this uproar mean for these victims today?

The Conservative Party is demanding a nationwide investigation into grooming gangs.
The Labour Party cries foul over perceived double standards, yet they are currently the target of a digital campaign that scrutinizes the actions of Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, and Keir Starmer's history as the previous chief prosecutor of the nation.
This week, The Times' investigative journalist Andrew Norfolk, who exposed the extensive abuse of young white girls mainly by men of Pakistani descent in 2012, came forward to support Starmer. Norfolk stated that Starmer played a crucial role in facilitating an increase in prosecutions.
He noted that there was a significant rise in conviction rates during the period when Starmer served as the Director of Public Prosecutions in the early 2010s.
This scandal, which persisted for years, was thoroughly uncovered by Norfolk, whose investigative journalism sparked multiple independent investigations, a series of resignations, police actions, and successful legal prosecutions.
Last week, the controversy was reignited following Philips' decision, which GB News reported, to not proceed with a government-directed investigation into grooming gangs in Oldham.
This is due to the fact that earlier inquiries in locations such as Telford, Rochdale, and Rotherham were all independent probes conducted under the auspices of the respective local governments.
Phillips is not opposed to an investigation in Oldham; in fact, she has urged the leader of the council to initiate one. Nonetheless, it's evident from the data that victims are more inclined to participate in inquiries that are conducted locally as opposed to those organized at a national level.

Yet, this incident ignited a reaction from Elon Musk – a tech mogul known for his active presence on Twitter but less informed about the UK's specific circumstances – who initiated a flurry of accusations concerning grooming.
He ignited a response among opposition leaders demanding measures, sparking a reaction that has also mobilized the government.
This week, the Labour Party pledged to adopt several suggestions from the Jay Review regarding child sexual exploitation.
The Jay Review, released in 2022 during the tenure of the Conservative administration, saw its recommendations go unimplemented by the responsible ministers.

Phillips is establishing a board comprised of victims within the Home Office to provide advice and feedback on necessary reforms to ensure truth and justice for victims.
Questions persist regarding the need for further investigation. Both the Reform Party and the Conservatives are advocating for a national inquiry to delve into the issue of grooming gangs, focusing on their frequency, underlying causes, and the institutional shortcomings that failed to protect numerous victims.

Andrew Norfolk suggests that the fundamental issues behind grooming gangs are yet to be thoroughly investigated, although he stops short of advocating for a nationwide public inquiry.
He is convinced that these gangs will continue to exist until thorough investigations are conducted into the conditions that enabled their growth.
In her 2022 analysis on child sexual exploitation, Professor Alexis Jay, revisiting her 2014 investigation of grooming gangs in Rotherham, pointed out that "most offenders were identified as 'Asian' by the victims, but during that time, council members failed to directly engage with the Pakistani-heritage community to explore collaborative solutions to the problem."
This week, The Times quotes someone from Norfolk as saying, "Discussing these matters often leads to accusations of Islamophobia, and that's unlikely to alter."
"Exploring why a tiny segment within a particular ethnic minority group was so excessively and disproportionately involved in these offenses is crucial. Such understanding could facilitate the necessary changes."

Jess Phillips contends that an additional inquiry is unnecessary, citing the Jay Review among several other independent investigations.
She expresses her commitment to pursuing justice for victims and eradicating sexual abuse.
"She expressed to me her openness to all future possibilities," she said, whether that involves initiating prevention programs, improving community relations, or addressing peer-on-peer abuse. Additionally, she mentioned the possibility of a national inquiry if the victims desire it.

In this week's episode of Electoral Dysfunction, we delve deeper with Jess Phillips, discussing not only recent events but also the enduring issue of grooming gangs and child abuse.
We discuss Phillips' personal reactions to Musk's tweets and explore what it was like for her to be at the center of the controversy, along with the implications for her security. We also address the critiques aimed at her and the prime minister.
I question her regarding claims that cover-ups were orchestrated to avoid inflaming racial conflicts within local communities, her reasons for opposing a nationwide investigation, and her irritation with figures in power—whether they be council members, social workers, or police officers—who did not safeguard young women and have yet to be held accountable.
Following the recent turmoil and uproar, I trust this will provide some clarity and perhaps shed some light on the matter as well.
Tune in for Beth's complete conversation with Jess Phillips in a special edition of Electoral Dysfunction, airing this Thursday.

UK Unveils Groundbreaking Sanctions to Combat People Smuggling, Targeting Criminal Finances and Operations
The UK government plans to implement a pioneering sanctions program aimed at disrupting human trafficking networks by cutting off their financial resources. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is set to provide more information about this initiative in a forthcoming speech on Thursday.

Wednesday, January 8, 2025, 10:
David Lammy is set to reveal that the government will launch a pioneering sanctions program aimed explicitly at targeting human traffickers later this year.
In a speech scheduled for Thursday, the foreign secretary is set to announce the initiative as a component of Labour's strategy to decrease Channel crossings by focusing on the criminal groups that coordinate these trips.
Latest in politics: Parliament rejects proposal for fresh inquiry into grooming
The specifics of the sanctions remain undefined, however, the government has announced its intention to cut off the illegal financial resources that sustain smuggling networks.
If this regime functions similarly to others of its kind, it might entail freezing the assets of individuals suspected of human trafficking, and violations of these sanctions could lead to prison sentences of up to seven years.
This follows recently revealed measures including travel restrictions and social media bans aimed at individuals suspected of being involved in organized immigration crime.
Mr. Lammy is scheduled to provide more information about the new policy on Thursday morning.
Before delivering the speech, the foreign secretary expressed: "It is with great pride that I reveal the UK will pioneer the creation of laws for a new sanctions framework aimed at addressing irregular migration and the criminal networks facilitating it.
"This will aid in halting, fighting, deterring, and interrupting irregular migration and the trafficking of migrants into the UK."
Report: Will the Government's Ambitious Strategy Succeed?
The UK has implemented multiple sanction systems, including those focused on Russians associated with the conflict in Ukraine.
Officials specializing in sanctions from various government sectors will collaborate with law enforcement and the Home Office to implement the new program, set to launch this year, according to the Foreign Office.
The program will operate independently within the UK, yet the government plans to collaborate with global partners to tackle human trafficking, the department noted.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, set to have discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron later today, described it as a "daring and creative" approach "to make sure we are exploring every possibility."
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated: "By implementing these new sanctions, we aim to focus on those who profit from endangering lives and impair the financial operations of these gangs, thereby hindering their ability to function."

Labour's strategy to decrease the number of small boat crossings focuses on breaking up human smuggling networks and enhancing global collaboration.
Sir Keir is facing scrutiny for halting the Conservative Party's delayed Rwanda deportation plan and reallocating a significant portion of the funds to establish a new Border Security Command (BSC).
The BSC will receive £150 million in funding to invest in advanced technology and additional intelligence personnel, aimed at dismantling the networks that assist migrants in crossing the Channel.
In 2024, over 36,000 individuals undertook a perilous trip, marking a 25% increase from the previous year.
Since the Labour Party assumed power in July, over 20,000 individuals have joined, a surge attributed by party insiders to the favorable summer weather.

However, detractors argue that the Labour Party's strategy is missing a key
Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel criticized the government for lacking authenticity in handling human trafficking, as she condemned the ministers for discontinuing the Rwanda strategy.
"She also noted that the previous Conservative administration enacted laws to address unlawful immigration and collaborated with global allies to apprehend criminals, hinder their operations, and achieve arrests, prosecutions, and convictions."

Cracking Down on Crime or Chasing Shadows? UK’s New Sanctions Plan Against People Smuggling Networks
The government's strategy to impose sanctions on human trafficking rings marks a daring and innovative shift – yet, the challenge lies in its effective implementation. These new measures aim to dismantle the economic foundations of these criminal networks, thereby curtailing their revenue streams and reducing the financial incentives for orchestrators of this perilous business. However, the success of this initiative is uncertain.
Europe correspondent @AdamParsons
Wednesday, January 8, 2025, 10:
Is it possible to deter human traffickers by imposing sanctions on them? This is the newest strategy proposed by the government, and it's both daring and inventive.
This approach is bound to turn heads, though its effectiveness remains to be seen. Nonetheless, it marks yet another attempt by the current administration to set itself apart from its predecessors.
Essentially, the plan is to slash funding to what is known by the Foreign Office as "organized immigration networks," aiming to prevent "smugglers from making money by exploiting innocent individuals."
Thus far, it's quite persuasive. The speech is effective. However, the actual situation could prove to be more challenging.
To start, while we anticipate specific plans, there's a huge uncertainty surrounding the feasibility of this endeavor.
Many of the traffickers facilitating illegal crossings of the Channel operate from outside the UK, though a few are based within the country. Typically, these individuals are elusive and difficult to locate.
I'm aware of this as I've encountered a few myself.
In Kurdistan, I shared a cup of tea with a jovial individual named Karwan, who had facilitated the clandestine passage of a thousand individuals into Europe.
He was entirely unafraid of capture and lacked any awareness that he was committing a crime.
Rather, Karwan believed he was fulfilling a responsibility to the Kurds by helping them flee the difficulties of their homeland for a chance at a better life in other nations, such as Britain. At least, that was his claim.
It's difficult to envision the specific ways in which Britain might enforce sanctions against him.
It's easy to imagine anxiety now beginning to unsettle the numerous smugglers I've encountered over my years reporting along the shores of northern France.
These individuals clearly know they are committing illegal acts. It's difficult to continually avoid the French authorities and still maintain that you are not at fault.
Firearms are increasingly present in refugee settlements. The threat of punitive measures is not deterring their spread.
The issue at hand is if the UK government has the capability to identify and impose impactful financial penalties on the leaders of these groups.
It's likely that if these individuals were in the UK, they would face arrest and could potentially have their assets seized.
Imposing sanctions is likely to require collaboration with European nations, including coordinating efforts and exchanging details. This task has grown more challenging following Brexit.
Historically, sanctions have been effective when aimed at prominent individuals and institutions with a well-documented history.

The wealthy elites supporting Vladimir Putin's government, along with firms attempting to acquire weapons for adversarial countries, have all faced actions from an alliance of countries.
This concept is innovative and initially one-sided, though it is likely that the French, Germans, Belgians, and others were given prior notice.
The specifics of its operation remain ambiguous – organized crime is notoriously adaptable, and if one individual is effectively sanctioned, it's probable that another will step in to fill the role.
Imposing penalties on the heads of smuggling operations in countries like Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Albania, and others will certainly be challenging.

The text highlights the shift from the previous emphasis on the Rwanda strategy as the primary goal, to Keir Starmer's approach, which concentrates on addressing criminality and collaborates closely with allies.
Additionally, it's important to mention that for a considerable time, authorities have referred to individuals traversing the Channel as illegal migrants. This terminology is contentious, as there's an ongoing disagreement between UK and international legal definitions regarding the legality of these crossings.
The Foreign Office has now adopted the phrase "irregular migration." Does this represent a shift in attitude, or is it merely a change in wording? Similar to the situation with the sanctions, time will tell.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has declined to criticize Donald Trump's declarations about taking control of Greenland and the Panama Canal.
Speaking to Wilfred Frost on Sky News, Mr. Lammy stated that he does not aim to criticize "our closest ally" in response to inquiries about whether he would condemn the rhetoric of the incoming U.S. president.
On Wednesday, Mr. Trump stated that he could not guarantee that he wouldn't use military force or economic pressure in efforts to gain authority over Greenland and the Panama Canal.
He expressed his desire for the United States to acquire the large island located off the east coast of Canada, which hosts a significant American military facility, citing national security and global freedom as his reasons.

The president stated that the Panama Canal, originally constructed for the U.S. military and crucial to both the U.S. and China, is now "operated by" China. He expressed disapproval of former President Jimmy Carter’s decision to transfer control of the canal to Panama in 1977.
France and Germany have voiced their apprehensions regarding Mr. Trump's statements, while Mr. Lammy dismissed the idea that he is concerned.

"This is the reason he's bringing up concerns about the Panama Canal, and I believe also regarding Greenland."
"He consistently emphasizes that to the maximum degree, with the utmost intensity. However, underlying that are genuinely significant issues related to national security and the economy."

Germany and France have cautioned Mr. Trump against making threats towards Greenland, however, Mr. Lammy stated that he would not be following suit.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that the rule of respecting national borders holds true for all countries, regardless of their size or power.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized, "it is clear that the European Union will not allow any global nations to violate its sovereign boundaries."
Further details on this issue: Denmark plans to increase military funding for Greenland. Trump's warnings may pose a crucial challenge for NATO's unity.
Mr. Lammy noted that Germany's firm position is probably because they are in the midst of an election campaign.
He mentioned that he believes the matters of national security and the impact of China on the Panama Canal are "valid concerns," which have been similarly discussed in the UK.
He further commented on Greenland, stating: "Ultimately, the decision rests with the Greenlandic people and their right to self-determination."
