Health Secretary Warns Against Using Weight Loss Drugs for Cosmetic Purposes Amid Sluggish NHS Rollout

Published

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has issued a warning against using Ozempic or Wegovy to achieve an 'Instagram perfect body'. This statement was in response to a Sky News investigation that disclosed a slower-than-expected NHS distribution of the touted weight loss medication. Streeting expressed concerns that widespread use could potentially lead to an increase in eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

Wes Streeting has cautioned against using weight loss injections such as Ozempic and Wegovy for achieving an "Instagram perfect body," especially given the rising popularity of these treatments.

The health secretary shared with the Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge that his perspective on the injections is quite complex. He acknowledged that while they can be revolutionary in addressing obesity, they shouldn’t be misused or overused.

Obesity incurs an annual expense of approximately £6.5 billion for the NHS and ranks as the second leading cause of cancer that can be prevented.

Research indicates that individuals typically shed about 15% of their body weight within a few months after beginning therapy with Wegovy, commercially recognized as semaglutide and also marketed under the name Ozempic.

The medication replicates the effects of a naturally occurring hormone, making individuals feel satiated more quickly and for an extended period

An investigation by our science correspondent, Thomas Moore, has revealed that the rollout of this vital service is lagging behind schedule, leaving thousands of potential beneficiaries without access.

When questioned about his worries regarding the report, Mr. Streeting expressed, "Actually, my perspective on this is quite detailed. I believe that certain medications can be revolutionary in addressing obesity issues.

For individuals who are extremely overweight and find that diet and exercise seem ineffective, it can seem like they are fighting a losing battle. In such cases, medication can play a significant role in helping to manage their weight.

"We need to be cautious and ensure that these medications are not used as a substitute for maintaining proper diet, nutrition, and exercise, or as a means to achieve an ideal body image for social media."

Mr. Streeting expressed concerns that widespread use of the medication could potentially lead to an increase in eating disorders and body dysmorphia. He emphasized that it should be used in conjunction with diet and exercise, not as a replacement.

"He pointed out that drugs are expensive and that expense is borne by the NHS," he added.

"It's wonderful that the NHS is available and accessible without charge when we need it… however, this doesn't imply that it should be taken for granted or misused."

Individuals have shifted their focus away from Brexit

In another segment of the discussion, Mr. Streeting asserted that the public has "moved on from Brexit," in response to questions about a green paper that reported an 11% decline in investment following the UK's departure from the EU.

The document, discussing the government's Latest Industrial Strategy, began with a preface by the chancellor focusing on strengthening ties with Brussels to facilitate easier trade and enhance business operations.

When questioned on the possibility of discussing re-entry into the single market or the customs union, in light of Labour's growth goals, Mr. Streeting responded, "People have moved on, the country has moved on, the EU has moved on."

"Let me make it clear, not only here but also in Brussels, there's really no desire to rehash those debates or revisit issues that have already been resolved."

He mentioned that the Remain group, which he supported, had predicted the economic fallout of Brexit—a prediction that, according to him, has become reality. "That's a fact of life. We have to deal with it," he stated.

"The ideal approach involves closely collaborating with the European Union whenever possible, while also demonstrating flexibility by engaging with partners in various other markets."

Discussing the dismantling of regulations, a major point made by Sir Keir Starmer at a gathering of business executives, Mr. Streeting noted that this issue has transcended traditional political boundaries in the UK.

"The NHS and certain areas of the economy are overly regulated."

"Often, a simpler approach yields better results. Historically, this has framed as a debate between the right and the left in UK politics. However, it ought to be viewed as a matter of right versus wrong instead."
