Hamilton’s Holy Quest: Aiming for F1 Glory with Ferrari and a Potential Vatican Visit, Says Steiner
Guenther Steiner suggests that Lewis Hamilton could find himself at the Vatican should he secure Ferrari's first F1 championship since 2008.
Ex-Haas leader Guenther Steiner humorously suggested that Lewis Hamilton might “find himself at the Vatican” should he guide Ferrari to an F1 championship victory.
The seven-time world champion is set to make a high-profile move from Mercedes to Formula 1's most iconic team in the upcoming season, teaming up with Charles Leclerc.
Hamilton has signed with Ferrari with the goal of securing an unprecedented eighth world championship, a victory that would surpass the legendary Michael Schumacher's achievement of five straight world championships with the team.
For 16 years, Ferrari has not claimed a championship title. Their most recent victory was securing the constructors' championship in 2008, and the last time a Ferrari driver won a world championship was when Kimi Raikkonen achieved the feat in 2007.
"Steiner believes his goal is to perform wonders by leading Ferrari to championship victories again, and he feels that's what motivates him," Steiner shared on the Beyond the Grid podcast.
"Clearly, I haven't had a conversation with him regarding this matter, but it's apparent to me that his intent for going there was to attempt a revival."
"'Regardless, I'm already considered the greatest of all time, having secured seven championships. What more could I possibly achieve?' With Mercedes, I have the chance to clinch my eighth title, assuming, of course, you perform well.
"At Ferrari, should I secure my eighth victory, or clinch a title for Ferrari, the fellow will find himself at the Vatican!"
Steiner acknowledged that he comprehends the attraction Ferrari holds for Hamilton, who will be entering his 40s when he slips into the iconic red race suit for the initial time.
"Steiner expressed the sentiment that Ferrari is integral to Formula 1, and likewise, Formula 1 is integral to Ferrari."
"I believe it's the enchantment that the Prancing Horse embodies, and being a part of it as a driver, especially in a favorable position, puts him in close association with Fred Vasseur."
"Lewis and Fred, along with his team, are familiar with each other, having achieved numerous victories in the junior racing categories."
"They share a tight bond and seem to make an effort to collaborate on a project. If they succeed, it's likely a significant achievement for the both of them."
Steiner supported Leclerc in gaining insights from Hamilton's extensive expertise.
"He added, 'Charles could really benefit from observing how seldom Lewis errs.'"
"He's an exceptionally well-rounded driver. His approach is strategic and thorough. With a vast experience behind him, both on and off the track, it's impressive how he manages to excel. Aside from his racing career, he's involved in numerous activities, yet he never loses focus on racing. It makes one wonder, how does he manage everything?"
"However, he's simply well-prepared, and over the years, he's acquired this knowledge. If Charles is smart, he'll observe it and think, 'hey, I too can achieve this success.'"
"Regarding driving capabilities, I believe Charles also has the potential to surprise us. In terms of driving, he is on par with Lewis. However, Lewis, as a racing driver, possesses a more well-rounded skill set. He has the speed, but he brings more to the table."
"Due to Charles being the younger, he lacks the experience. However, Lewis possesses this, providing an opportunity for Charles to learn from him."
