Analysis: How an Insect Incident Almost Affected Marc Marquez in Australia
Marc Marquez sheds light on the visor tear-off issue during the Australian MotoGP.
Marc Marquez has clarified the circumstances that compelled him to discard the visor tear-off, which nearly resulted in a disastrous beginning and jeopardized his win at the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix.
The Gresini racer experienced significant wheelspin as the 27-lap Phillip Island Grand Prix began, causing him to quickly lose positions.

After securing the second position in qualifying, Marquez found himself as far back as 13th when entering Turn 1 on his GP23, but he rapidly climbed back to sixth place.
Marquez eventually confronted Jorge Martin, who had been leading the race for a long time, and triumphed over the Pramac team rider in an exciting showdown.
Marc Marquez found himself in 13th place as he approached the first turn due to a problem with his tear-off, which led to the rear tire spinning unexpectedly. In the parc fermé area, Marquez stated that he usually avoids taking off a visor tear-off while on the grid, describing the action as "dangerous."
However, a "massive object" hit his visor while he was positioning himself on the grid, prompting him to swiftly remove the tear-off. Unfortunately, it ended up getting caught under his rear tire after he tossed it aside.
This caused his car to experience significant wheelspin at the start, almost jeopardizing his chance to secure his third grand prix victory of the season.
Marquez explained to TNT Sports that there was a large bug on the protective film of his visor.
"I was unable to see, and I would have reached the initial turn still unable to see."
Right after the race, Marquez shouted, "There's always something that goes wrong!"
"I avoid removing the tear-off at the beginning as it poses a risk."
"However, when I engaged the bike's holeshot this time, an enormous object appeared right before my eyes."
"I didn't have an opportunity to consider it. I removed it."
"Unfortunately, it ended up beneath my wheel. I noticed it and attempted to move it, but it was not possible."
"When I let go of the clutch, it began to rotate."
"I'm not sure about my position at the first turn, but I passed several riders."
"I initially believed that catching up to Martin was out of reach, but by the fifth or sixth lap, I felt more composed. I was conserving my tires for a final push."
Marquez stated that the riders have an informal agreement to reduce the number of visor tear-offs discarded on the grid to ensure safety.
A well-known incident involving tear-offs causing issues occurred at Misano in 2020. During this event, Jack Miller's Ducati bike accidentally ingested a tear-off discarded by Fabio Quartararo, which led to the premature end of Miller's race.
Ultimately, I take responsibility for what happened. Although it's not a formal rule, we riders have an understanding to avoid taking off the tear-off on the grid, both for our own sake and for everyone else involved, he clarified.
"However, on this occasion, I was left without any options."
From 'Beginner's Mistake' to 'Top Victory' on a Ducati
According to Michael Laverty from TNT Sports, Marquez encountered trouble when an insect got caught in his visor while waiting on the starting grid.
"Usually, if there's an insect on the visor, drivers will remove the tear-off layer as they leave the starting grid," Laverty explained.
He engaged the mechanism to lower the front part of the equipment. Once he reached his designated area, he aimed to get rid of the fly.
He removed the tear-off, but it accidentally got caught in the wind and ended up beneath his bike.
"You're attempting to engage 300 horsepower on a slick plastic surface…"
"He managed to handle it with great skill."
Laverty mentioned that he was unable to remove his tear-off as he approached the grid.
He accidentally let it fall beneath his bicycle, which was quite a beginner's mistake. This happened because he turned on the bottom mechanism.
"I can't comprehend how he succeeded in navigating his confrontation with Enea Bastianini during the first lap."
"He powered through the field with unwavering strength."
The decisive move for victory came from a significant distance back. He made a bold maneuver on the inside, causing Jorge to drift slightly off his line. After that, he pushed hard for three laps to gradually increase his lead.
He secured a decisive win, marking an impressive return to form. This was his most outstanding performance on a Ducati to date.
On lap 25 out of 27, Marquez made a critical maneuver by boldly overtaking Martin on the inside at Turn 4, which caused the Pramac rider to drift a bit off his line.
His victory at the Australian Grand Prix is his first at Phillip Island since 2019, and it's also the first occasion since 2021 that he has achieved three grand prix wins in a single season.
Enea Bastianini finished a distant fifth at the finish line, leaving Marquez 14 points ahead of the Ducati factory racer who is currently in third place in the overall rankings.
