Francesco Bagnaia Highlights ‘Huge’ 2024 Shift for Rival Jorge Martin: Navigating Pressure in MotoGP Showdown
Francesco Bagnaia discusses a significant change coming in 2024 for Martin and cautions that the pressure is still palpable. He mentioned that he believed he was handling the pressure well last year, but when he reached Valencia…
In 2024, Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin are once again competing against each other for the MotoGP World Championship title, marking the second year in a row of their rivalry.
In contrast to the previous year, Martin, who secured second place for Pramac, has been at the forefront of the points rankings for the majority of this season.
The Spanish rider holds a 10-point lead over Bagnaia as they approach the Australian MotoGP this weekend, marking the start of the final four rounds of the season.
When questioned about the ways in which Martin's riding has evolved since last season, the current two-time champion Bagnaia responded:
"The most notable change from last season is that he has begun this season on a much stronger note."
"Regarding the standings, he was almost consistently in the lead. He dominated the championship for the most part, except in Qatar, as I claimed victory in the first round, and briefly in Sachsenring and Austria, where I had a slight points advantage."
"He was more consistent than I was, as we faced some unfortunate situations involving collisions or mechanical problems with the bike."
"In my view, what he has enhanced is his awareness that he can achieve victory and remain competitive. This realization significantly alters the situation."
"The most significant change I experienced was when I claimed my first MotoGP victory and when I contended for the championship in 2021. This had a profound impact."
"Regarding the psychological aspect, I believe it's something you can only fully grasp when you reach the final stages of the competition."
Certainly, Bagnaia, who clinched his MotoGP championships at the last race, competing against Fabio Quartararo in 2022 and Martin in 2023, admitted that the stress of contending for the world title remains consistently challenging.
Bagnaia shared that he felt better prepared last year than he did the previous year when he struggled with sleeplessness and nervousness.
"Last year, I believed I had a good handle on things, but upon reaching Valencia, I felt somewhat more confident due to my 21-point advantage. However, my mental state remained largely unchanged."
"It's natural to experience pressure, and you must also confront and overcome it."
In 2024, Martin and Bagnaia will compete for the MotoGP championship on identical bikes for the final time in the foreseeable future. This is due to Martin's decision to join Aprilia, following the selection of Marc Marquez as Bagnaia's partner in the 2025 factory Ducati team.
