Fernando Alonso’s Strategic Play: Texting Adrian Newey to Spark Aston Martin’s F1 Revolution

Fernando Alonso sent a message to Adrian Newey, attempting to persuade him to join Aston Martin's Formula 1 team.

Fernando Alonso disclosed that he sent a message to Adrian Newey after it was announced that Newey would be leaving Red Bull, in an attempt to convince him to come to Aston Martin.

The renowned 65-year-old designer in Formula 1 is set to join Aston Martin as the managing technical partner at the beginning of 2025. This move comes after he signed a five-year contract, which is said to be valued at up to £30 million annually, following his choice to leave Red Bull after almost 20 years with the team.

Double world champion Alonso, who has a contract with Aston Martin that runs through 2026, mentioned that he contacted Newey soon after it was announced in May that Newey was leaving Red Bull.

Alonso mentioned to Aston Martin’s official site that he had been hopeful Adrian would come on board once he chose to leave his former team.

"Initially, you envision it as a potential reality. There were several rumors circulating about him joining other teams. I inquired with Lawrence, Martin Whitmarsh, and different team members to find out if we had reached out to Adrian."

"I actually reached out to him myself. I have his phone number, so I sent him a message saying, 'What an unexpected turn of events. If you're ever interested in a fresh opportunity, I'd be thrilled to collaborate with you someday.'"

"I later discovered that Adrian and Lawrence Stroll had been communicating. Lawrence informed me regularly about the progress of their discussions. When Adrian chose to come on board, I felt an immense sense of joy and pride – proud that he was eager to collaborate with us and had faith in what we were aiming to achieve."

In response to a question from Crash.net, Alonso, who celebrated his 43rd birthday in July, acknowledged during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that he might not have enough time left in his career to take advantage of Newey's contributions.

In the Aston Martin article, Alonso mentioned that he "wouldn't be truthful" if he claimed he hadn’t considered how Newey joining the team might influence the duration of his F1 career.

The Spaniard mentioned that Adrian is set to join in March of the following year and will focus his efforts until 2026. He expressed that they would assess his feelings at the conclusion of 2026 to decide if he should continue, emphasizing that this will be a joint decision made with Lawrence Stroll and Adrian.
