Fernando Alonso’s Bold Move: Texting Adrian Newey to Join Forces at Aston Martin F1
Fernando Alonso sent a message to Adrian Newey in an effort to persuade him to join Aston Martin's F1 team.
Fernando Alonso disclosed that he sent a message to Adrian Newey after hearing about his exit from Red Bull, in an attempt to convince him to move to Aston Martin.
The renowned F1 engineer, aged 65, is set to join Aston Martin as the managing technical partner at the beginning of 2025. His engagement comes under a five-year deal, allegedly valued at as much as £30 million annually, following his departure from Red Bull after an extensive stint of almost 20 years.
Double world champion Alonso, currently contracted with Aston Martin through to 2026, revealed that he made contact with Newey soon after his departure from Red Bull was made official in May.
"Alonso expressed his desire for Adrian to come onboard after he left his last team," Alonso shared with the official Aston Martin website.
Initially, you entertain the thought that it could happen. There were a few whispers about him being linked with other squads, and I found myself querying Lawrence, Martin Whitmarsh, and several others within our team about whether we had reached out to Adrian.
I ultimately reached out to him. I possess his contact information and sent him a message saying, 'It's quite unexpected. Should you ever seek a fresh endeavor, collaborating with you would be a pleasure for me.'
"I later discovered that Adrian had been communicating with Lawrence Stroll. Throughout the negotiation process, Lawrence kept me informed. Upon Adrian's decision to come on board, I was overjoyed and filled with immense pride. It was gratifying to know he was eager to collaborate with us and had faith in our vision."
Alonso, who celebrated his 43rd birthday in July, acknowledged during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix following an inquiry from Crash.net, that he could face time constraints in leveraging Newey’s contributions.
In the article about Aston Martin, Alonso admitted that it would be dishonest to claim he hasn't considered how Newey joining the team might influence the duration of his career in Formula 1.
"Adrian is set to come in March of the following year and commit his efforts until 2026. At the conclusion of '26, I'll assess my feelings and whether I have the capacity to continue. This will be a collective decision made alongside Lawrence [Stroll] and Adrian," the Spanish driver remarked.
For me, this presents an astounding chance, as being behind the wheel of one of Adrian's F1 cars is quite extraordinary. Moreover, collaborating with individuals of Adrian's stature offers immense learning opportunities, making it greatly fulfilling.
