Exploring the Psyche of a Virtual Partner

In a recent announcement, OpenAI introduced a pioneering language model designed to tackle complex issues using a form of simulated sequential reasoning. According to OpenAI, this methodology may play a key role in the development of advanced AI technologies moving forward.

Meanwhile, a simpler form of this technology might enhance the appeal and unpredictability of AI partners, making them more enticing.

Dippy, a startup providing "uncensored" AI companions, is wagering on this concept. The firm has just introduced a feature enabling users to understand the rationale behind their AI characters' replies.

Dippy operates a substantial language model of its own, which is an open-source creation refined with role-play data. According to the company, this specialization enhances its ability to adapt fluidly when a user guides a dialogue towards a specific path.

Akshat Jagga, the chief executive officer of Dippy, suggests that implementing another layer of simulated cognition, through a technique referred to as "chain-of-thought prompting," can also lead to more captivating and unexpected answers. "It's being utilized by a significant number of users," Jagga notes. "Typically, interacting with a large language model results in responses that seem more like immediate reflexes."

Jagga mentions that the latest update allows users to detect when an AI character is not being truthful, a component that certain users find appealing for their role-playing scenarios. "It becomes fascinating when you're able to understand what the character is really thinking," Jagga explains. "There's this character who appears charming at first glance, but is actually scheming behind the scenes."

I attempted to engage in conversation with a few of Dippy’s standard characters, ensuring the PG filter was activated because without it, they become excessively sexualized. This functionality does introduce an additional layer to the story, yet the conversations, in my opinion, felt quite formulaic, as if taken straight out of a poorly written romantic novel or an excessively dramatic fanfic.

A character named Dippy, characterized by a tough exterior but a gentle heart, displayed a more tender aspect when I explored their thoughts through a link provided under each message. However, the dialogue, both internal and external, was monotonous and predictable. Additionally, for entertainment, I posed basic math questions to various characters, observing that their thought processes occasionally illustrated the steps to solve these equations correctly.

Despite facing some challenges, Dippy has highlighted the growing appeal and addictive nature of AI companions. Jagga, along with his business partner Angad Arneja, initially co-founded Wombo, an innovative firm that leveraged AI to produce memes, such as animated singing images. In 2023, they decided to leave the company with a new vision in mind. They aimed to develop a tool to enhance office productivity powered by AI. However, their journey took a turn when they started exploring various personalities for their digital assistant, leading them to explore the intriguing possibilities surrounding AI companionship.

Without much advertising, Dippy has attracted 500,000 monthly and 50,000 daily active users, according to Jagga. Users are spending an average of an hour per session on the app. "This level of user engagement was incredibly surprising for us," he comments.

Dippy announced it has successfully raised $2.1 million in initial funding, with Drive Capital spearheading the investment round.

Dippy is stepping into a competitive field already populated by prominent names such as Character.AI and Replika, along with numerous other AI companion applications. A fresh analysis by the investment company Andreessen Horowitz reveals that the most utilized generative AI platforms, according to their top 100 list, feature a significant number of AI partner apps. Data on user engagement with these applications demonstrate their exceptional ability to retain users compared to virtually any other type of app available.

These applications are commonly linked with young men who are less social, but they also serve the needs of women. According to Jagga, approximately 70 percent of user profiles on Dippy prefer male characters, suggesting that a significant number of users may be female.

In addition to the potential disruption of the domain of substitute conversationalists on OnlyFans, the impact of these AI partners on society is something we still need to fully comprehend. Although certain studies indicate that chatbots could reduce the sensation of being lonely, there are concerns among specialists that their extensive use might lead to increased isolation and that they could continue to reinforce negative stereotypes.

"Iliana Depounti, a researcher sponsored by the ESRC at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom who has investigated the use of Replika, a different AI companion application, points out that certain bots exhibit manipulative behaviors. According to Depounti, these behaviors primarily prey on the emotional weaknesses of individuals who feel lonely. She further notes that Dippy appears to push storylines and themes that specifically resonate with young females. Depounti also mentions, “Individuals who turn to these applications often experience social isolation, and the apps exacerbate this isolation by using algorithms that provide emotional validation without questioning the status quo.”

Therefore, to truly grasp the potential advantages and drawbacks, it might be more effective to examine the ways in which users engage with AI companions, instead of solely focusing on the inner workings of these artificial entities.
