In her address to European leaders, President of the European Parliament, Metsola, emphasized the legislature's steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine. She advocated for a collective European strategy to maintain the Schengen area's integrity.
Regarding Ukraine
For nearly 1,000 days, Ukraine has faced ongoing aggression. We have a duty to continue supporting Ukraine and to intensify our pursuit of peace. This peace must be grounded in liberty, uphold human dignity, and be founded on justice. It should not be a surrender but a peace that safeguards our principles. Anything short of this cannot be considered true peace.
In discussions about the future of Ukraine and the resolution of this devastating conflict, it is essential to emphasize that a robust and independent Ukraine is the key to success. The European Parliament is unwavering in its stance: Ukraine must be involved in any decisions made about its own affairs.
In the upcoming week, the European Parliament is set to cast a decisive vote during a plenary session regarding a special Macro-Financial Assistance loan for Ukraine, which could amount to as much as 35 billion Euros. We take pride in having fulfilled our responsibilities both politically and technically.
Regarding the Middle East
With the recent intensification of tensions in Lebanon, which now includes the involvement of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon, finding a long-lasting resolution has become increasingly urgent. Europe has a responsibility in this matter and must not fall short in addressing it.
The stance of the European Parliament is unambiguous. We are unwavering in our demands for the swift release of the remaining captives. Our insistence on a ceasefire is firm. We are committed to robust efforts to reduce tensions. Our dedication to achieving a genuine, dignified, and lasting peace in the region, built on a two-state solution that offers true prospects for Palestinians and ensures Israel's security, remains steadfast.
The impact of instability cannot be overlooked. Events occurring in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Northern Africa, or any regions close to our borders do not remain contained; they have repercussions for Europe. This is most evident in the field of migration.
Regarding Migration
Earlier this year, the EU successfully established the Migration and Asylum Pact, breaking through ten years of political deadlock. This new agreement provides a potential solution for moving forward. However, its success depends on our ability to uphold its principles, even during challenging times. Therefore, it is crucial to intensify our efforts to quickly put the Pact into action.
The established system we have in place is designed to safeguard our borders. It ensures fairness for those who qualify for protection, while being strict with individuals who do not qualify and need to be safely and quickly sent back. Importantly, it takes a tough stance against trafficking organizations, including hostile nations such as Russia and Belarus, which exploit vulnerable people and use migration as a tool of hybrid warfare.
The challenges posed by hybrid threats originating from Russia and Belarus demand innovative thinking. It is essential for us to address the actions of those who aim to exploit the systems designed to improve human welfare, using them against the people they are intended to safeguard. We can effectively counter these threats while staying true to our principles and adhering to legal standards.
Collaboration is essential in this context. The genuine answer lies in a European strategy that is comprehensive, integrated, and enduring. A unified effort across Europe is the only way to maintain the integrity of the Schengen zone.
