Dorna's Chief Supports Simon Crafar in Aiming for Uniformity in Stewardship

Carmelo Ezpeleta Shares His Opinion on the Shift within the Stewards Committee

Dorna's CEO believes Simon Crafar is the solution to the ongoing issues with MotoGP stewarding.

Former racer Crafar, who now serves as a commentator for the official MotoGP broadcasts, is set to take on the role of chairman for the stewards panel next year.

He is set to take over from Freddie Spencer in the position.

This season has seen intense scrutiny over the decisions made by stewards.

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta acknowledged that the ambiguity regarding what actions the stewards consider punishable is similar to that in other sports.

"Ezpeleta admitted to AS that football too leaves him bewildered."

"It's evident that avoiding errors is challenging, yet my request to the FIM, which I plan to make at the year's end when discussions take place, is for decision-making to be uniform. This is crucial since the FIM, along with the IRTA, are responsible for overseeing the stewarding."

Ezpeleta supported Crafar in providing that steadiness.

"He expressed optimism, noting that the decision regarding his position lies with IRTA. He praised his character, yet also shared his fondness for Spencer."

"Spencer has been recognized as one of the most talented participants in the history of this championship, highlighting his insight into the complexities involved in being a steward."

The incident involving Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martin at the Emilia Romagna MotoGP marked a contentious moment under the scrutiny of the stewards.

Officials decided Bastianini's maneuver to pass was not significant enough to merit further scrutiny, as per the official records.

However, Crafar subsequently disclosed that while the stewards did conduct an investigation, they ultimately decided against penalizing Bastianini.

Marc Marquez was among the individuals who argued that Bastianini deserved a penalty.

In another event, a crash initiated by Jack Miller at Mandalika, which was classified as a racing incident, prompted Aleix Espargaro to challenge the uniformity in the judgments made by the race officials.
