However, it's clear that there would be times when the team could have gained from Lewis's expertise.

Kimi will face a challenging learning process, but the team is making the correct decision, and everyone agrees that it wouldn't have been handled any other way.

Ferrari has assigned the code name 'Project 677' to its car for the upcoming year.

Russell triggered an early stoppage in the session after crashing heavily at Turn 9, leading to a 25-minute interruption.

Mercedes announced that after visiting the medical center, Russell was found to be in good health.

Charles Leclerc secured the fourth-fastest time driving for Ferrari, while Lando Norris finished in fifth position, also representing Ferrari.

Max Verstappen, the current championship leader and Norris's main competitor for the title, encountered difficulties as he was unable to record a lap time. He spent a significant portion of the second practice session (FP2) off the track while Red Bull examined a problem with the power unit in his car.

Both drivers emerged from the crash without injuries, and following an extended interruption, Mercedes’ Russell set the fastest lap on soft tires, surpassing Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz by 0.317 seconds.

Yuki Tsunoda secured third place in his RB, trailing Russell's fastest time in FP1 by 0.701 seconds. He managed to position himself ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was 0.8 seconds slower.

Nico Hulkenberg secured fifth place for Haas, followed by Oscar Piastri from McLaren, Esteban Ocon representing Alpine, and Valtteri Bottas from Sauber. Liam Lawson and local favorite Sergio Perez completed the top ten for Red Bull and RB.

Franco Colapinto, who filled in for Williams, secured the 11th spot. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli, the quickest among the five newcomers participating in the initial practice session, took Lewis Hamilton’s place in the Mercedes.

Last month at Monza, Antonelli made his debut in a Mercedes during the first practice session and ended up crashing. This incident led to an early red flag after he collided with some loose debris on the main straight.

Pato O’Ward secured the 13th spot while driving the McLaren, which is usually piloted by championship contender Lando Norris. Felipe Drugovich, representing Aston Martin, finished in 18th place. Robert Shwartzman, driving for Sauber, took 19th position. Meanwhile, Bearman, who was driving for Ferrari, ended up with the slowest time following a crash that concluded his session.

Following the session, Red Bull announced that they are looking into a potential problem with the power unit in Verstappen's car. It appears that the unit in question is an older model from his available collection.

According to Formula 1 rules, each driver is required to allow a rookie driver to take their place in one free practice session.

During the initial practice session, Shwartzman was among five newcomers participating.

A driver supported by Ferrari received a penalty for passing Yuki Tsunoda while double-waved yellow flags were displayed.

The event took place after Alex Albon collided with Oliver Bearman.

Displaying two yellow flags, Shwartzman overtook Tsunoda during the race.

The officials observed that after the event at turn nine, Shwartzman drove past a single yellow flag and a double yellow flag. During this time, he overtook Tsunoda in the designated caution area while maintaining high speed.

"The penalty imposed is the standard one for overtaking under a double yellow flag. Although the stewards acknowledge that the driver is not set to begin the race, they have enforced the usual penalty."

The penalty given to Shwartzman is atypical since it is probable that he will never actually have to fulfill it.

The 25-year-old driver is currently competing in the World Endurance Championship and did not secure a spot in Formula 1 despite having impressive seasons in FIA Formula 2.

There has been a similar situation in the past when Jenson Button received a grid penalty due to an incident that occurred in Monaco while he was substituting for Fernando Alonso.

Button never fulfilled that penalty because it was his last race in Formula 1, a single appearance.

Russell leads the pack, followed by Sainz, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Piastri, Perez, Tsunoda, Bottas, Ocon, and Magnussen.

The Spanish driver clocked a time of 1 minute and 18.573 seconds, placing him 0.4 seconds in front of Verstappen.

Russell quickly surpasses that with an impressive time of 1 minute and 17.998 seconds.

Several drivers have returned to the track equipped with soft tires, among them are Sainz, Russell, Verstappen, Perez, and Piastri.

After 23 minutes have passed, the first practice session has resumed in Mexico.

Footage reveals Albon losing command of his Williams vehicle, resulting in a collision with Bearman's Ferrari.

Both drivers have exited the session, with Albon evidently to blame.

It seems there was some interaction between Albon and Bearman. We are currently waiting to view a replay for confirmation.

The list includes Albon, Russell, Sainz, Bottas, Magnussen, Tsunoda, Piastri, Perez, Hulkenberg, and Lawson.

Albon clocks a time of 1 minute and 19.812 seconds, placing him just 0.004 seconds faster than Russell. Currently, all drivers on the circuit are using hard tires.

Carlos Sainz has clocked in with a time of 1 minute and 19.942 seconds, putting him 0.4 seconds ahead of Kevin Magnussen.

The Mercedes driver clocked a time of 1 minute and 20.727 seconds on hard tires, maintaining a lead of just under a tenth of a second over Perez. Magnussen secured the third position, surpassing Sainz.

The track has been cleared of debris and the session has resumed. Piastri, Ocon, Sainz, and Tsunoda are now on the circuit.

Verstappen clocked a time of 1 minute 20.970 seconds, placing him at the top of the leaderboard and 0.8 seconds in front of Bottas.

Currently, rounding out the top five are Piastri, Ocon, and O'Ward.

Debris has been spotted on the start-finish line, leading to a temporary halt in the session.

Bottas is in the lead with a time of 1 minute and 21.806 seconds, placing him 0.6 seconds faster than Piastri.

The 24-year-old driver from Japan, representing Red Bull’s affiliated team RB, is set to test Red Bull's latest car at the post-season testing event, which will take place after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this December.

Tsunoda had only driven a Red Bull car once before, which was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where he took the RB18 for a spin.

Honda has been advocating for Tsunoda to have an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in a Red Bull car, and team leader Christian Horner has announced that a test is scheduled.

During Friday's FIA press conference at the Mexico City Grand Prix, Horner informed the media, including Crash.net, that Yuki is part of the junior team, a topic that has been discussed with Honda.

After the season ends, he is set to evaluate the car during the tire testing. This arrangement has been settled for a while now.

"It will be beneficial to let him have another session and to collaborate with the Red Bull Racing engineers to observe his performance in one of their cars."

Although Yuki Tsunoda has delivered better performances than Daniel Ricciardo, who is no longer with the team, he has apparently never been viewed as a viable candidate to partner with Max Verstappen.

Liam Lawson, who stepped in for Ricciardo, is considered a stronger contender to replace Sergio Perez should the Mexican driver keep underperforming.

Horner reiterated that Perez holds a legitimate contract with Red Bull for the year 2025.

"Checo is under contract for the upcoming year, which means he is our driver for the 2025 season," he stated.

It’s clear that there’s an open spot at VCARB; however, all the drivers there are currently on loan from Red Bull Racing.

"We have the advantage of time to discuss various possibilities with Laurent Mekies, the team principal of RB, and Peter Bayer, the CEO of RB."

Engine Woes Cut Max Verstappen’s Mexico FP2 Short: A Day to Forget for the Championship Leader

Max Verstappen's second practice session in Mexico was abruptly halted because of an unusual sound coming from his engine, leading to an early conclusion of his day.

During the second practice session of the Mexico City Grand Prix, Max Verstappen had to halt his run prematurely because of a problem with his Formula 1 power unit.

In the second practice session, Verstappen only managed to do four laps and did not record a timed lap.

The man from the Netherlands mentioned right away that he noticed an “odd sound” coming from his engine.

He communicated via the team radio, saying, "There is a strange sound coming from the engine."

During that moment, the Red Bull engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, instructed him to keep going.

Not long after, Verstappen communicated over the radio once more, expressing, "This sound is quite unsettling. It doesn’t seem normal."

Verstappen received instructions to enter the pit lane while Red Bull looked into the problem.

Following the incident involving George Russell that led to a red flag, Verstappen initially went back onto the circuit but soon made his way back to the pit lane.

Due to the unresolved issue, Verstappen was unable to carry out any significant laps during the second practice session.

On their official X account, Red Bull announced: "Car 1 will not participate in FP2 as we continue to look into a power unit problem."

Verstappen characterized his day as "essentially worthless".

Verstappen mentioned that the issue originated from the engine area, although he wasn't sure of the exact problem. He expressed that the day was largely unproductive for him, as he only completed four or five laps, providing little information to analyze at this time.

"I didn't have a successful session, managing only four or five laps altogether, even including some extended runs. It was definitely a day best left behind."

Max Verstappen leads the F1 drivers' championship by a margin of 57 points over Lando Norris, with five races remaining in the season.

After a contentious encounter with Norris during the United States Grand Prix, his advantage in the championship standings increased.

Norris received a five-second time penalty for passing Verstappen while off the track at Turn 12 during the race at COTA.

The penalty was pivotal in putting Norris behind Verstappen, which enabled Verstappen to extend his lead in the championship.

The meeting was prolonged by half an hour, giving all the teams the opportunity to try out Pirelli's tyres designed for the upcoming year.

As a result, the session did not accurately reflect the usual speed.

Max Verstappen experienced reduced track time because of a problem with the power unit.

In the initial practice session for the Mexico City Grand Prix, George Russell set the fastest time, finishing 0.3 seconds quicker than Sainz.

The initial hour of practice was chaotic, marked by two red flag interruptions.

The initial incident occurred due to debris on the main straight, whereas the subsequent one was significantly more intense.

Alex Albon, while approaching Oliver Bearman, lost control of his Williams, leading to a crash.

George Russell’s Frustration Mounts After Mercedes’ FP2 Crash in Mexico: ‘It’s One Thing After Another

George Russell expressed his frustration following his recent crash during the second practice session for the Mexico City Grand Prix, admitting that he feels like he's facing a series of continuous setbacks.

Footage revealed Russell hitting the curb at Turn 8, which caused him to lose control and crash into the barriers.

The accident caused the session to be postponed for an extended period while the barrier was fixed.

Because of how serious the accident was, Russell was transported to the medical facility.

Fortunately, the Mercedes driver was unharmed and was discharged from the medical center.

Before that moment, it had been a successful day for Mercedes, as Russell was leading the times in the second practice session.

Considering his second accident in a week, Russell explained to F1TV in Mexico: “To be honest, I’m not sure what occurred. The car began to bounce on the track, and before I could regain control, I was already in a spin.”

"The team faced numerous challenges this evening, as it appears that issues keep arising one after the other."

"It's quite exasperating. In the first practice session, we performed exceptionally well and maintained great speed. I attempted to follow the same path by cutting the corner, but for some reason during the second practice session, the situation unexpectedly spiraled out of control."

Russell highlighted how crucial the last practice session was, especially since he couldn't participate in FP2, which was primarily a Pirelli tire test for the following year's compounds.

He mentioned that the second practice session, being a Pirelli tire test, didn't offer much useful information for the race weekend.

"Clearly, we didn't get enough laps in. The third practice session will be crucial. We just need to ensure the car is repaired in time."

George Russell expressed his frustration following his recent accident during the second practice session for the Mexico City Grand Prix, admitting that he feels like he's facing continuous challenges at the moment.

Just 13 minutes into the second practice session, Russell experienced a significant crash at Turn 8.

Footage revealed that Russell hit the kerb at Turn 8, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle and crash into the barriers.

The accident caused a significant postponement of the session while the barrier was being fixed.

Because of how serious the accident was, Russell was transported to the medical facility.

Fortunately, the Mercedes driver was unhurt and was discharged from the medical facility.

Before that moment, Mercedes had experienced a successful day, as Russell had set the fastest time in the second practice session.

After experiencing his second accident within a week, Russell explained to F1TV in Mexico, "To be frank, I'm unsure of what occurred. The car suddenly began to bounce off the ground, and before I could regain control, I was already spinning."

"The team had to put in a significant amount of effort once more this evening. Currently, it feels like there's a constant stream of challenges."

"It's really annoying. During the first practice session, we were performing excellently and had a lot of speed. I attempted to use the same approach by cutting that corner, but for some reason in the second practice session, things just didn't go as planned."

Russell highlighted how crucial the last practice session is, especially since he was absent from the second practice, which was focused on testing Pirelli's tire compounds for the upcoming year.

He mentioned that the second practice session (FP2) didn't provide significant insights for the race weekend since it was mainly focused on testing Pirelli tires.

"Clearly, we didn't get enough laps in. The third practice session is going to be crucial. I just hope we're able to repair the car in time."
