Sergio Perez reflects on his extremely tough season

Sergio Perez claims that this season has been his toughest yet in Formula 1.

The Red Bull racer started the season aware that Daniel Ricciardo was one of the candidates being considered to take his spot.

Several early top-three finishes helped establish Perez's reputation. However, he soon faced difficulties and couldn't control the RB20, which was later revealed to be losing its competitive edge.

Max Verstappen initially managed to deal with the issues his car was facing, but once the F1 champion began experiencing difficulties as well, Perez's troubles became clearer.

“This year has been challenging,” he mentioned to DAZN.

"It seems that this year has been quite challenging due to the restrictions I've faced with the car, making it difficult to fully convey my experience, don't you agree?"

"As your teammate continues to succeed, he is performing exceptionally, creating a growing challenge for you."

"Throughout the summer, I faced significant challenges, marking one of the toughest periods in my Formula 1 career."

When Perez was questioned about which single moment from his career he would choose to eliminate from memory, he responded: "Honestly, these past six months have been tough, so I'd prefer to forget them."

Picture having a car that restricts you so much that by the time the weekend arrives, you're aware there's nothing you can do with it. The sole thought on your mind is the constant possibility of crashing it because you lack the ability to control it.

There was widespread speculation that Perez might be replaced in his Red Bull racing position halfway through this year.

In the end, they decided to support him, leading to Ricciardo from RB being swapped out for Liam Lawson.

"Ultimately, the matter of the contract became something that people overlooked," he stated.

"I signed an agreement this season. Although there's frequent talk about extending it, I'm not concerned because I'm confident about my position."

Perez put on an impressive performance in Azerbaijan, staying in the fight for a top-three finish until a mishap with Carlos Sainz on the final lap dashed his hopes.

One significant reason McLaren has surpassed Red Bull in the constructors' championship is his failure to score points.
