Behind the Scenes: MotoGP’s Unseen Mid-Pack Battles and Tyre Gambles

Luca Marini suggests, "We should have a camera positioned farther back." He adds, "There are always exciting races happening at the rear."

In three out of the last four MotoGP events, such as the latest Japanese Grand Prix, the victor has achieved the feat of maintaining the lead throughout the entire race.

That doesn't create engaging television content.

Numerous racers have pointed out that some of the most challenging contests in MotoGP happen off-camera, particularly for spots in the middle and back of the field.

"In the rear positions, intense fights are a constant," remarked Luca Marini following his 14th place finish at Motegi.

"Whenever I mention that we should have an additional camera at the rear capturing the action from P7 to the finish, it's because there are some wild and fascinating maneuvers happening!"

A number of challenging maneuvers occurred right at the start of the race in Japan.

"The initial lap was chaotic, causing me to lose significant time and several positions," explained the Repsol Honda racer, who had started from the 20th position on the grid. "This made my race somewhat challenging, but I eventually managed to execute some overtakes."

"At the start of this weekend, we were aware that this track might be among the most challenging for us due to its minimal grip."

"In my opinion, finishing 13th in the Sprint and 14th in the Grand Prix were the best outcomes we could have achieved."

The Italian expressed remorse for not taking the same risk as LCR racer Takaaki Nakagami, who opted for the soft rear tire and managed to finish in 13th position.

"I initially believed that choosing the medium tire was the right decision. However, after observing Taka's performance with the soft tire, I reconsidered. While on the grid, I contemplated using the soft tire because it seems to suit our bike much better. The key would have been to manage it effectively throughout the entire race."

"In conclusion, Taka maintained impressive speed and, in my view, was the quickest Honda rider on the circuit. Based on his data, opting for the soft rear tire might have been a more favorable choice. Nonetheless, this provides valuable insights."

Marini mentioned that controlling the bike during braking and coming to a stop was significantly harder when using the medium tire. Additionally, he noted that maintaining grip on the edges while applying the throttle was challenging, as it led to frequent sliding without gaining speed.

"However, when I noticed that the Michelin representative was recommending the tire selection and everyone else opted for the medium tires, I didn't want us to be the sole team using the soft rear tire."

I agreed to follow the same strategy as everyone else, aiming to achieve the best possible outcome to gather more data for future use.

"It's encouraging that Taka completed the race using the soft tires, as this allows us to analyze the data and gather valuable insights for future races and next year."

Phillip Island, where the Australian MotoGP is taking place this weekend, was the site of a notable tire strategy executed by championship contender Jorge Martin a year ago.

The Pramac racer was in front for the majority of the race using a soft rear tire, but was overtaken by competitors with medium tires during the last lap.
