Yamaha’s Strategic Dilemma in Rain-Soaked Misano: Quartararo Triumphs, Rins Struggles
Yamaha clarifies the dilemma of switching bikes during the rain in Misano
"The team attempts to keep the riders updated, giving them all the information they can"
Yamaha’s racers chose varying tactics during the San Marino MotoGP due to shifting conditions, resulting in differing outcomes.
When it started raining at Misano, Fabio Quartararo decided to continue on his slick tires, while Alex Rins opted to switch to a different bike.
Jorge Martin from Pramac faced the most significant setback due to the ill-fated choice to switch bikes, as the weather conditions rapidly improved.
Rins began the race in 20th position, but his decision to switch bikes didn't pay off. He ended up in 19th place after Aleix Espargaro dropped out.
Quartararo exhibited clever strategy by securing the seventh position with a late move past Jack Miller.
"It's been some time since we've experienced a race that ran continuously from start to finish," remarked Massimo Meregalli, the head of the Yamaha team.
"This situation is always challenging. The crew endeavors to keep the riders updated, giving them all the necessary details and the most recent weather forecasts. Ultimately, however, it is up to the riders to decide whether to change bikes."
Fabio chose wisely by not pitting, and he performed excellently. As the rain intensified, he closed the gap with the leading pack, which enabled him to compete for seventh position.
"Alex was positioned 19th when the rain intensified, leaving him with minimal risk."
"Situations like this can unfold in two different directions: had the rain continued, he would have benefited, but with the abrupt end to the rain, his decision proved to be incorrect. That's the nature of racing."
"[This coming Monday] we'll return to the Misano circuit for the official IRTA test. We're optimistic for clear skies to gather valuable data, not just for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix but also for overall motorcycle improvements."
Quartararo remarked, "The initial laps were particularly challenging as the rain began to fall."
"Typically, rainy conditions don't benefit us, but I managed to keep up with the leading racers, so it turned out well. I had a good time during the race."
"I didn't experience the emotions I anticipated, but my placement is favorable. I was behind the other riders, so I just mirrored their actions."
"I almost headed to the pits for a bike change at one point, but when I noticed most riders continuing, I chose to stay on the track. Fortunately, the track dries very quickly here, so it turned out to be a good decision."
Rins commented: "The race was somewhat challenging to handle since I chose to head to the pit to switch bikes and put on wet tires. It had been raining for two laps already. However, once we got back on the track, the rain ceased."
"After completing two laps on wet tires, I had to return to the pit and switch to a bike with dry tires. Once I did that, my speed improved compared to the others, but overtaking remained challenging."
“Monday holds significance for the future as we plan to trial some new equipment. Our goal is to conduct a successful test, which may result in having new items ready for the Misano #2 race weekend.”
