Yamaha’s Misano Gamble: Quartararo’s Triumph and Rins’ Regret Amidst Flag-to-Flag Drama
Yamaha clarifies the dilemma of changing motorcycles during Misano's rainfall
"The squad aims to keep the riders updated, offering them ample information"
Yamaha's racers chose varied tactics at the San Marino MotoGP amid shifting weather, leading to divergent outcomes.
Fabio Quartararo remained on dry tires despite the rainfall at Misano, while Alex Rins opted to change his motorcycle.
Pramac's Jorge Martin was significantly affected by the ill-advised choice to switch motorcycles as the track conditions rapidly improved.
Beginning from the 20th position, Rins' decision to change motorcycles did not pay off. He ended up in 19th place, only moving up because Aleix Espargaro dropped out.
Quartararo skillfully secured a seventh-place finish by overtaking Jack Miller towards the end of the race.
"Yamaha team leader Massimo Meregalli remarked that a significant amount of time has passed since the last flag-to-flag race."
"Decisions like these are complex. The crew makes an effort to keep the riders well-informed, sharing abundant details and the most recent weather forecasts with them. However, ultimately, it's up to the riders to decide whether they wish to change bikes."
Fabio's choice to remain on track proved smart, and he demonstrated exceptional skill in his riding. As the rainfall intensified, he closed the gap with the leaders, enabling him to contend for the seventh position.
"Alex found himself in 19th position just as the rain began to intensify, leaving him with not much at stake."
"In such scenarios, there are typically two possible outcomes: had the rain persisted, he would have benefited financially, but the abrupt cessation of rain proved his decision to be a misstep. That's the nature of racing."
"Come Monday, we'll be returning to the Misano circuit for the official IRTA testing session. Our fingers are crossed for clear skies to ensure we can gather valuable information, focusing on preparations for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix and overall motorcycle advancements."
Quartararo remarked, "It was incredibly challenging, particularly during the initial laps when the rain began to fall.
Typically, rainy conditions don't benefit us, but I was able to keep up with the leading competitors quite well, which was positive. I found the race enjoyable.
"The sensation wasn't what I anticipated, yet the placement was advantageous. The other competitors were ahead of me, so I mirrored their actions."
"At a certain point, I nearly made the decision to head into the pits to switch bikes, but noticing that most others continued on, I chose to remain on the track. Fortunately, the track here has a quick drying time, so in retrospect, it turned out to be a good decision."
Rins elaborated, "Managing [the race] proved somewhat challenging since I made the choice to head back to the pit to switch motorcycles, opting for wet tyres. It had already been raining for a couple of laps. However, just as we returned to the track, the rain ceased."
"After completing two circuits on wet tyres, I found myself compelled to return to the pits and switch to the dry bike. Following that change, my speed was superior to my competitors', though passing them proved to be challenging."
"Monday marks a significant day ahead, as we plan to conduct trials on several new products. We're aiming for a successful evaluation, hoping it paves the way for introducing these items at the upcoming Misano #2 race weekend."
