Yamaha and Honda: A Journey to MotoGP Success Expected by 2025 Despite Concessions

Yamaha and Honda's advancements expected by 2025? 'They're allowances, not miracles'

Swift solutions unlikely to overhaul Honda and Yamaha's MotoGP success.

Yamaha and Honda currently benefit from an array of technological advantages against their European counterparts in MotoGP, thanks to the updated concession 'ranking' system implemented this year.

Aleix Espargaro, having experienced the earlier concession system with Aprilia, cautioned that the benefits – such as exclusive testing with racing riders and a waiver from the mid-season engine design halt – should not be seen as a miraculous solution.

The key factor is time, with Espargaro suggesting that improvements in performance from the Japanese makers won't be seen until 2025.

"Espargaro emphasized the need for patience, stating 'these are adjustments, not miracles,' when inquired about his anticipation for the Japanese manufacturers to have narrowed the gap by this point."

"I believe the efforts from the previous winter will become apparent in the upcoming season."

"Since they began hiring new engineers last winter, they've initiated the development of innovations that haven't been implemented on the track just yet."

"Thus, it is the aspiration of all enthusiasts of this sport that Yamaha and Honda will exhibit enhancements by the 2025 season.”

Yamaha and Honda are at present positioned at the bottom 'D' concession level, which allows them to enjoy the complete spectrum of advantages. Ducati has achieved an 'A' ranking, having earned more than 85% of the total possible points for manufacturers, while KTM and Aprilia are placed in the 'C' category.

Up to this point in the current season, Yamaha's top performance in a race has been a fifth-place finish (initially third in the Jerez Sprint before a tyre pressure penalty was applied to Fabio Quartararo) and a seventh-place finish in a Grand Prix event (Portimao).

Honda, after the departure of notable racer Marc Marquez and COTA victor Alex Rins, has achieved a top race finish of 9th (at the Jerez Sprint) and 12th in a Grand Prix (at Lusail, Portimao, Jerez).

A year ago, the best race outcome for Yamaha was a third-place finish by Quartararo at COTA, during which Rins, previously with LCR, secured Honda's sole win of the year.

One year later, Quartararo remains Yamaha's leading rider, currently in 12th place, a slight drop from his 11th position at this same point last year. Meanwhile, Joan Mir has emerged as Honda's best performer, ranked 16th, an improvement from Takaaki Nakagami who was 17th last year.

Regarding the allocation of constructors' points, crucial for establishing the concession rankings, there's been a significant decline for the two Japanese manufacturers thus far.

The performance of each manufacturer relative to the first four rounds of last year is outlined as follows:

Initial four races of 2023: Portimao, Termas, COTA, Jerez.

Initiating the first four races of 2024: Lusail, Portimao, Circuit of The Americas, and Jerez.

Aprilia stands out as the sole manufacturer retaining its rider duo for both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
