Wolff’s Verstappen Chase: Mischief or Masterstroke? Brundle and Rosberg Weigh In on Mercedes’ 2025 Dynamics
Toto Wolff is alleged to have caused trouble deliberately to annoy Red Bull in his pursuit of Max Verstappen.
Martin Brundle weighs in on if George Russell should be concerned.
Martin Brundle suggests that Toto Wolff's overt efforts to court Max Verstappen are primarily aimed at irritating Red Bull, labeling it as "mischief."
The head of Mercedes joyfully declared that Kimi Antonelli is set to take over from Lewis Hamilton, joining George Russell in the team's roster for 2025.
However, he shared his persistent ambition to lure Verstappen from Red Bull to Mercedes by 2026.
The upcoming 2026 F1 rules might pave the way for Mercedes to lead a new period of supremacy, should they develop the most powerful engine. This advantage could make them the preferred team for all drivers, Verstappen included.
Sky Sports' Brundle mentioned, "Toto is equally focused on causing disruption for Red Bull as he is on ensuring stability for Mercedes."
"At that moment, he was flanked by George on one side and Antonelli on the other!"
"They also oversee the careers of both drivers."
George steps into the role as the main driver for the formidable Mercedes team, entering a season where their vehicle appears to be competitive.
"Everything is within his reach. I believe he doesn't have to worry about the competition behind him."
Brundle's opinion differs from Nico Rosberg's, who anticipates a competition among Mercedes drivers for their positions in the upcoming season.
"Rosberg forecasted a direct competition between Antonelli and George," he said.
"George will find himself in a challenging spot. With a young prodigy, only 18, in the mix, the expectation for George to surpass Antonelli puts him in a situation where he has more to lose than gain next year."
"He needs to outperform Antonelli to maintain his position next to Verstappen, which is a challenging situation."
