Wolff Admits Even Adrian Newey Might Struggle with Mercedes’ Woes as Team Faces Setback in Miami

Toto Wolff acknowledges that even Adrian Newey might find it challenging to address the issues faced by Mercedes

Toto Wolff is queried on the possibility of Adrian Newey moving to Mercedes

Toto Wolff suggested that not even Adrian Newey could tackle the issues Mercedes faced in Miami.

George Russell secured the seventh position, while Lewis Hamilton landed in eighth place for the F1 Miami Grand Prix qualifications.

Neither of them managed to earn a single point in the sprint race on Saturday.

Once again, the drivers from Mercedes expressed concerns regarding the performance level of the W15.

Mercedes' team leader Wolff was questioned regarding his curiosity in Newey, Red Bull's departing head of technical operations, who appears to be available for hire.

"Wolff mentioned to Sky Germany that he is an outstanding engineer."

"Currently, it's likely that not even the most skilled illusionist could easily tackle the issues we face."

Mercedes, akin to other leading squads in Formula 1, is anticipated to keep a close watch on Newey's forthcoming decision.

Newey, often hailed as the best Formula 1 car designer in history, is set to leave Red Bull the following year.

Ferrari appears to be in the prime position to sign him. Next year, Newey could see Hamilton driving in Ferrari's iconic red.

Hamilton provided a grim assessment of his qualifying performance on Saturday.

"Being eight-tenths behind is challenging," he commented.

"We're in a battle with Haas, and it's uncertain if our current pace reflects our car's actual capabilities or if it's influenced by the tire performance."

Russell remarked post-qualification: "Upon examining the data, it becomes clear to us why we find ourselves in our current standing.

"We've shifted from one extreme to another, so now we need to step back and locate a middle ground."

Mercedes introduced an updated floor design at the Miami event.

Andrew Shovlin, the director of trackside engineering, stated, "In the upcoming four to five races, we are exploring additional improvements aimed at enhancing the car's handling, making it more stable and easier to manage. These updates are expected to be introduced in the next several races."

"Our progress in development is lagging, which is a key aspect we must enhance."

"Moreover, enhancing the car's adaptability on various circuits will be a key priority for our team."
