VW Unveils Feature Details for 2025 ID.Buzz in U.S. Market: A Nostalgic Electric Revival with Modern Flair

Volkswagen has unveiled additional specifics regarding the features, various trims, and color options for the much-anticipated 2025 ID.Buzz tailored for the American market, although it has not yet disclosed the pricing.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.Buzz will make its debut in the United States with an exclusive 1st Edition variant, alongside two additional models, the Pro S and Pro S Plus.

Volkswagen has stated that the cost for the American model will be disclosed near its release date. Initially, the company aimed to begin shipping the U.S. model by June or July of 2024, but the latest updates from Volkswagen of America imply a delay, pushing the arrival towards the end of that year. Currently, there seems to be no active digital configurator for U.S. customers to customize and view the various options and sizes for the American market.

Volkswagen has disclosed that the American version of the upcoming 2025 VW ID.Buzz will feature a wheelbase that is almost 10 inches longer compared to the two-row variant, which will not be available in the U.S. market. The U.S. model will be equipped with a 91-kWh battery and initially offer a single-motor electric powertrain, delivering 282 horsepower, borrowed from the 2025 VW ID.4. A more powerful, dual-motor option producing 335 horsepower, mirroring the ID.4's capabilities, is also in the pipeline. VW has confirmed that the American model will include an optional retractable tow hitch for towing purposes, although specific towing capacities have not been disclosed yet.

The European version of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Two years back, Green Car Reports evaluated the ID.Buzz EV with a standard wheelbase—a model aimed at Europe and various other regions—and praised it as an exceptional choice for families, akin to a modern-day minivan. It inherits the impressive driving dynamics and smooth ride of the VW ID.4, thanks to the shared MEB platform.

The ID.4's inaugural release, known as the 1st Edition, enhances the Pro S model by featuring a dual-color exterior, exclusive 20-inch wheels, added roof rail crossbars, a sunroof with a panoramic view, an interior design inspired by the seaside, along with a high-quality 700-watt sound system, automatic sliding doors, and an electronically operated tailgate.

The entry-level Pro S variant is equipped with 20-inch rims, a system to aid in parking, customizable lighting with 30 color options, and the upgraded, larger 12.9-inch display for the infotainment system, a feature now common across the majority of the ID.4 range.

The distinctive feature of the longer U.S. model is the inclusion of a second-row bench seat, which increases the seating capacity to seven. The Pro S Plus model comes with this bench seat as default when equipped with a single motor, though there is an option to choose captain’s chairs, reducing the number of seats to six. Both the Pro S Plus and the 1st Edition models come with the captain’s chair configuration, and this setup is a standard offering on all vehicles with all-wheel drive.

The release of this vehicle for the US market has been pushed back so it can be modified to include a third row of seats. However, none of the ID.Buzz models come with seats that fold down entirely flat. This highlights a common problem with electric vans designed with a skateboard layout, where the battery pack takes up the underfloor space. The 1st Edition comes standard with, and the Pro S Plus has the option for, a Flexboard system. This system features two fabric compartments for storage and creates a level surface when the seats are down by placing a raised platform that extends to the trunk at the same height as the folded second row. Although the third row of seats can be completely taken out, the second row has the ability to move back and forth by 7.9 inches.

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz revives the classic VW Microbus as a contemporary electric vehicle, and its arrival has been eagerly anticipated. This holds particularly true for the American audience, who likely have the deepest nostalgic ties to the original Microbus through their automotive heritage.

Volkswagen has concluded that the American market is not interested in the version of the ID.Buzz that measures 185.5 inches in length, which is comparable to the top-selling Tesla Model Y in terms of the space it occupies when parked, despite having a wheelbase that is roughly four inches longer. For the version destined for the U.S., the ID.Buzz will be stretched to a length of 192.4 inches, a width of 77.9 inches, and a height of 74.6 inches, while its wheelbase will extend to 127.5 inches. Additionally, it will feature an expansive panoramic glass sunroof, which will be 67.4 inches in length and 40.8 inches in width, complete with the capability to change its tint electronically.

Volkswagen is focusing heavily on the variety of color schemes available for the ID.Buzz, with distinct variations planned for the American market. The exterior boasts vibrant two-tone color schemes featuring a bright white paired with shades of orange, yellow, green, blue, among others. More subdued single-tone options like silver, white, and pearl are also available. The interior of the U.S. models will feature its own special mix of hues, with faux-leather seating in tones of brown and gray, select trim pieces resembling wood, and an assortment of accent piping colors. One particular interior color scheme, named Copper, aims to evoke the essence of mid-century modern design.

The iconic VW Microbus was never initially marketed for its lavish interior or opulent amenities, nor did it aim to capture the essence of mid-century style. However, as Volkswagen grapples with the direction of the Buzz, crafting it as a contemporary interpretation of a nostalgic classic, it's uncertain if this significantly larger version will resonate with the American market.

What prompted Tesla to equip the entry-level Model Y with a larger-than-necessary battery? How come electric vehicle charging doesn't seem as pertinent to those living in countryside areas? Earlier in the month, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk dismissed almost all members of the Tesla Supercharger team, despite having previously identified them as crucial to Tesla's success going forward.

According to sources, Trump proposes to eliminate EPA regulations that favor electric vehicles. BP is attempting to salvage abandoned Supercharger locations due to Tesla's faltering charging strategy. Also, is it logical to have a huge battery without a charging outlet in fuel-cell semi-trucks and possibly pickup trucks? Toyota believes it does. More on this…

Toyota hints that by increasing battery capacity, hydrogen fuel-cell technology could be enhanced to better accommodate distance and load requirements in an updated semi design.

It's understandable that oil corporations were hesitant to embrace Trump's proposal right away, considering they've evolved into international "energy companies" with a broad portfolio, and gasoline is just one aspect of their older business operations.

It's said that BP intends to allocate $1 billion towards the installation of more than 3,000 charging stations across the U.S. by the year 2030, with around $500 million of that investment occurring within the coming two to three years.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 emerges as a solid competitor to the Tesla Model 3. California demonstrates ways to reduce the cost of home EV charging. The Ioniq 6 electric four-door car distinguishes itself and offers considerable range at a highly competitive cost.

Research has revealed that car seats, particularly in more affordable cars, have been found to contain chemicals that could be dangerous, including substances linked to cancer.

California is contemplating the implementation of a standard fee on electric bills from its major utility companies as a trade-off for decreased expenses associated with charging electric vehicles.
