Volvo’s Electrifying Future: EX60 SUV to Launch on SPA3 Platform by 2026
The upcoming Volvo EX60 electric SUV is set to arrive in 2026, built on an advanced scalable framework. While Volvo has just launched the SPA2 platform with the 2025 EX90 electric midsize SUV, with American deliveries beginning this year, the company is on the verge of unveiling an upgraded version of this base. On Thursday, Volvo revealed the upcoming platform, named SPA3.
According to Autocar's reporting on statements from Volvo's Björn Annwall, who serves as the chief commercial officer and deputy CEO, during the unveiling of the revamped 2025.5 XC90 SUV on Wednesday, the new SPA3 platform is set to launch in 2026 with the EX60, which will serve as the electric counterpart to the highly popular XC60 compact crossover.
Annwall expressed enthusiasm about the XC60, noting its high demand in the electric variant. He anticipates a significant increase in electric vehicle adoption once it's available.

The swift development of the SPA3 platform is due to it utilizing the same software systems and electrical framework as the SPA2 platform, a setup Volvo calls the Volvo Cars Superset technology stack.
The distinction of the SPA3 platform lies in its adaptability to accommodate electric vehicles of various sizes, from smaller subcompact cars to larger full-size models, as per Volvo's statement.
According to Autocar, the new platform is expected to feature the large-scale casting technique, which Volvo announced in 2022 that it intends to employ at its Torslanda facility in Sweden. This is the manufacturing site for the XC60 model.
Volvo's large-scale casting
Mega casting involves the production of big, singular cast pieces for elements such as sections of the car's floor, as opposed to the conventional approach of assembling various smaller parts to create the whole component. Volvo claims that this technique not only diminishes the overall weight (which enhances the vehicle's range and efficiency) but also gives designers more freedom to optimize the space within the car's interior. Additionally, it is expected to streamline the manufacturing process.
During the unveiling of the 2025.5 XC90 on Wednesday, Volvo announced that it is developing five new electric vehicles, including the EX60. Additionally, an ES90 sedan is in the works, which will act as an electric counterpart to the S90 and is anticipated to be built on the SPA2 platform.
On Wednesday, Volvo disclosed a shift from its 2021 announcement to transition entirely to electric and PHEV vehicles by 2030. The car manufacturer now targets 90-100% of its 2030 sales to consist of a mix of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, with a small fraction, up to 10%, still being gasoline vehicles. Consequently, the XC60 is expected to continue being available even after the introduction of the EX60, mirroring Volvo's strategy of offering the XC90 alongside the upcoming EX90.
