Volvo XC90 Facelift (2024): Luxus-SUVs letztes Hurra vor der elektrischen Revolution
The 2024 Volvo XC90 Facelift: A Final Effort
The nearly decade-old luxury SUV is getting one last update…
It feels like an era of what could have been, of missed opportunities, and of unmet expectations. By now, the shift to electric mobility should have been well underway. That one electric model was expected to have replaced its fossil-fuel predecessor and should have been turning a tidy profit for the manufacturer.
However, the moment for this change has not arrived yet. That's why Volvo has decided to give its flagship SUV, the XC90, another update. This is the very model that was supposed to have been replaced by its electric sibling, the EX90, as the saying goes.

To ensure a seamless transition, the Swedish brand is sending out their flagship model once again, described as "more contemporary, comfortable, and luxurious." Available, of course, as either a plug-in hybrid or a mild hybrid.
The XC90 now also features Thor. The front has been updated with sleeker matrix LED headlights that offer a fresh take on the hammer motif. The hood, fenders, and air intake have been redesigned to align with the latest design trends. The striped grille stands out prominently. At the rear, the taillights have been given a darker appearance.
Overall, the original basic shape of the second generation that has been on the market since 2015 remains unchanged. Volvo's exterior update is completed with the introduction of new wheel designs and a fresh color option: "Mulberry Red".
Volvo has turned its attention to enhancing the interior, particularly updating the somewhat outdated infotainment system. A new, prominent 11.2-inch touchscreen has been installed (replacing the previous 9-inch screen) equipped with Volvo's latest user interface, which is already in use in models like the EX90 and EX30. Additionally, the system has been streamlined to ensure that users can access their most frequently used features quickly and with minimal effort.
Additionally, the center console has been redesigned to include a "2+1" cup holder configuration, a wireless charging pad for smartphones, a freshly styled dashboard, updated air vents, and new fabric choices for the seats. Continuing their commitment to sustainability as seen in the EX30, Volvo has incorporated the eco-friendly material Nordico.
Volvo has made further technical enhancements to give the vehicle a slightly more dynamic driving experience. The mild hybrid versions B5 and B6 now feature an updated MP-Miller combustion process, further enhancing their efficiency. Additionally, the front axle has been fitted with a double wishbone suspension.
A newly designed rear integral link aims to enhance stability and grip when towing. The default suspension system has been upgraded with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) to improve ride comfort. Additionally, advancements in noise insulation are expected to make the drive quieter and more comfortable.

The Volvo XC90 is slated to come out as a T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid featuring a four-cylinder gasoline engine with electronic boosting and a turbocharger alongside a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Together, they offer a combined peak output of 220 kW (310 hp) from the gasoline engine and an additional 107 kW (145 hp) from the electric motor. Energy storage is handled by a 400V three-layer lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 14.7 kWh, which is designed to be fully charged in three hours using an AC source.
Additionally, there is a mild-hybrid four-cylinder gasoline engine with variable turbocharging available, delivering 184 kW (250 hp). The previously mentioned B6 model is not yet available in Germany. The initial price for the Core trim level starts at 87,490 euros. The starting price for the mild-hybrid version is 79,890 euros.
