Volkswagen Unveils Design Details of the New T7 Transporter, Paying Homage to Its Iconic Predecessors
The 2025 VW Transporter T7 will visually reference its predecessors – the T1, T5, and T6.1.
Volkswagen's commercial vehicles division has unveiled initial design elements of the forthcoming Transporter model.
Until now, the new Transporter has only been seen heavily disguised in camouflage, but Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is now giving us a clearer view of the actual T7, explaining that its design concept draws inspiration from its ancestors – the T1, T5, and T6.1.
It's rather peculiar: In reality, we're already well-informed about the new favorite among business owners, which was created in collaboration with Ford and alongside their Transit/Tourneo Custom. We've had the opportunity to peek inside the cabin and we've been briefed on its dimensions and cargo space. Even the pricing for the master hauler, set to launch in early 2025, is no secret. We've compiled all these details for you in this article.
Until now, there has been some ambiguity regarding the design of the entirely reimagined generation of transporters. However, that's starting to shift, at least to some extent. We're being provided with some visual materials, a video, and accompanying explanations from Albert Kirzinger, the Chief Designer at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
"The seventh iteration of the iconic Bulli van pays homage to its predecessors by reimagining their classic design elements. This approach is a hallmark of the series – each new Volkswagen Transporter has consistently represented a visual evolution, seamlessly connecting the brand's extensive heritage with the present and the future. This design philosophy has kept the series fresh for over 80 years, cementing its status as the world's leading van in its category," states the designer responsible for the T7's aesthetics.
Kirzinger notes a brief glimpse of the T5 in the grille's design, while the headlights reflect the T6.1 and the timeless simplicity of the T1. The headlights are positioned slightly lower and more horizontally compared to its platform sibling, the Ford Transit.
The head of design comments on the side aspect of the van, which ranges in length from 5,050 mm to 5,450 mm: "Similar to the T6.1, we extended the top edge of the headlights into a line that runs along the side to the rear. This creates a distinct, straight contour – the 'Bulli line' – that separates the upper and lower parts of the body and serves as a tribute to the T1."
The latest wheel collection includes rims measuring 16, 17, and 19 inches. The images showcase the "strikingly distinctive" 19-inch "Indianapolis" alloy wheel featuring a polished rim edge, complemented by six black spokes and inner surfaces.
Similar to the T6.1 and Crafter models, the fuel cap for the diesel and plug-in hybrid variants is located in the B-pillar area. For those driving plug-in hybrid and all-electric models, the charging port is situated below the right headlight.
Regarding electric propulsion: It is expected to be adopted from the Ford E-Transit. If this is the case, a 64-kWh battery pack (providing a range of 330 kilometers) and electric motors with either 100 or 160 kW would be included.

The rear end of the seventh iteration of the VW Transporter appears sleeker and more streamlined than the Transit. The commercial vehicle will once again be offered with a choice of a tailgate or barn doors. The design of the rear lights, featuring LED dots extending sideways, is intended to create a visual connection to the T5 model.
The design of the seventh iteration of the transporter should continue to prioritize function. Take the rear hatch or barn door for instance: the cut-out extends deep into the bumper, allowing for a low loading edge ranging from 575 mm to 638 mm, depending on the model.
The launch of the new transporter is scheduled, as mentioned, for the first quarter of 2025 with starting net prices from 36,780 euros.
