Verstappen’s Imola Mastery: Hill Praises Max’s Edge Over Norris in Thrilling Emilia Romagna GP Victory
Max Verstappen praised following victory at Imola: "He's just a bit ahead of the others, right?"
Damon Hill is of the opinion that Max Verstappen stood out in Imola during his fight for the win.
1996 Formula One World Champion Damon Hill has lauded Max Verstappen's remarkable win at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Verstappen edged out Lando Norris at Imola, securing his fifth win of the season.
This performance might be considered his best of the year to date, especially considering how fast McLaren was at certain points during the weekend.
Verstappen claimed the pole position, surprising many as McLaren appeared to be the frontrunners, whereas Norris demonstrated marginally better speed on the hard tyre in the race's final stages.
Hill believes that Verstappen stood out due to his exceptional performance, despite Red Bull not providing him with a leading car.
"Hill mentioned on Sky Sports’ F1 show that since he earns a substantial amount of money, he ought to be putting in a significant effort."
"Those particular ones offer greater fulfillment. He's aware that he clinched that race, securing the top starting spot. They didn't supply him with an unbeatable vehicle."
"He stands out a bit more than the others, doesn't he? He had to leverage his skill to secure victory in this race.
"It's wonderful to witness Lando's presence too. It seems as though the universe is conspiring to make this season's competition between the two of them quite captivating."
Ex-W Series competitor Naomi Schiff observed Verstappen's unmistakable joy following the race, a reaction that has been rare throughout Red Bull's years of supremacy in recent times.
"She noted that the mix of Lando's annoyance and Max's joy clearly indicates that the competition is in full swing."
"Max has never seemed more joyous this year. They've had an excessively long streak of dominance, so it's refreshing to witness them facing some challenges. Kudos to Max too. In the final moments, he was really being pushed as Lando was quickly gaining on him."
As his battery depleted, he found himself manually handling the steering wheel, especially challenging with Lando right behind him in DRS range. That's the kind of action we look for.
At the start of the race, we wondered: 'Will he take a commanding lead?' If there had been two additional laps, we would have witnessed a fierce competition between them.
Hill commented, "It really draws out their top performance. It's like pressing oranges; you need to apply significant pressure to extract the quality parts! Lando's concentration seemed significantly sharper.
"He was spotted on the racetrack, which is exactly why I tuned into F1."
