Valtteri Bottas Awaits Crucial Decision as Audi Deliberates 2025 Driver Line-Up
Valtteri Bottas will learn about his future in Formula 1 within the coming weeks as Audi considers their options.
Alessandro Alunni Bravi, a spokesperson for the Sauber F1 team, indicated that Audi is expected to finalize their choice of drivers for the 2025 season in the upcoming weeks.
Audi is still considering their choices for the upcoming year, which has left Valtteri Bottas unsure about his future in Formula 1.
As the Azerbaijan Grand Prix approaches this weekend, Bottas suggested that he will probably remain with Sauber next year. However, he also mentioned that IndyCar could be an option if his career in Formula 1 were to conclude.
McLaren's young driver Gabriel Bortoleto is considered a potential replacement for Bottas if Audi decides to bring in a promising new talent.
Mattia Binotto, who took charge of the Audi F1 project in July, will be making the decision.
During the FIA press conference on Friday, Bravi was questioned about the driver situation and responded, "I believe this is something Mattia is currently evaluating. This process began just two weeks ago. As we mentioned in Monza, he is now responsible for making these decisions, and the choice of drivers is among the most crucial."
"We are considering various possibilities to determine the optimal balance between immediate performance and future potential, possibly involving younger talent. There are promising candidates in both categories. Valtteri is a valuable driver for our team, and we are very familiar with his capabilities."
"He has been part of the team for three years now. Naturally, he is a priority for us, but we are also considering other options. We are weighing all the advantages and disadvantages. Mattia will make a decision that considers both the 2025 season and the long-term strategy for the Audi F1 project."
The sole remaining open spot on next year’s grid is the second Sauber seat next to Nico Hulkenberg.
Alpine has recently brought Jack Doohan on board after losing Carlos Sainz to Williams. Meanwhile, during the Italian Grand Prix, Mercedes officially announced the signing of Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Regarding the timeline, Bravi indicated that an announcement is expected within the next few weeks.
“It isn’t about meeting a specific deadline,” he explained. “We’re not looking to take advantage of the situation. With just one spot open, we want to thoroughly evaluate all factors and make the best choice. There’s no hurry, but we aim to finalize this in the coming weeks.”
