V8-Triumph: Mercedes-AMG Setzt Weiterhin auf Achtzylinder-Power in Neuen Modellen
Joyful news! Mercedes-AMG continues to develop new V8 vehicles
Not all AMGs will succumb to the downsizing trend
Following the shock of the new C 63 and GLC 63 losing four cylinders, leaving fans dismayed, concerns about AMG's future are justified. However, you'll be pleased to know that the beloved V8 engine is not facing extinction. Mercedes has now confirmed that more models with eight-cylinder engines are on the horizon.
Details on the upcoming vehicle from Affalterbach featuring a 4.0-liter engine remain under wraps, but it's speculated to be the CLE 63.
Jerry Stamoulis, who heads media relations and product communications for Mercedes-Benz Australia, informed CarSales that enthusiasts can expect further developments with V8 engines: "We have additional offerings in the pipeline. The V8 remains an integral component of our range, providing various choices. For those with a penchant for a V8 AMG, rest assured, we can accommodate that. We're not just stopping there. Indeed, it's a different model compared to the C 63. However, the C 63 Sedan is at the forefront, ushering in our latest technological advancements."
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Coupé, spotted in March 2023, is essentially a revival of the CLK, combining the two-door and convertible versions of the C- and E-Class models. It already packs a larger engine than the standard C-Class, with the AMG CLE53 featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. It's widely believed that the even more powerful CLE 63 will continue to sport the V8 engine. Earlier this year, Autocar quoted "senior officials" at Mercedes stating that the flagship model will retain the eight cylinders of the M177 engine, supplemented with mild-hybrid technology.
However, it appears that wasn't the original intention, or so we've been led to believe. There are whispers that the CLE 63 was intended to feature a plug-in hybrid system utilizing a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, much like the one in the C 63. For those staunch believers in the "there's no replacement for displacement" philosophy, this would have been a distressing development. Considering the CLE's AMG 53 model boasts a six-cylinder engine with 449 horsepower, opting for a smaller combustion engine in the 63 variant seems out of place and could cause some confusion.
Despite rumored modifications to the powertrain during the latter stages of development, the CLE 63 is still on track for a debut before the end of 2024. It is expected to be available in both coupe and convertible models.
The power source for the upcoming E 63 generation remains undecided. Nevertheless, approximately a year ago, AMG head Michael Schiebe mentioned the exclusion of a V8 engine. It's possible that a plug-in hybrid inline-six or a comparable option could surpass the CLE 63 in terms of performance. Yet, the adoption of a less powerful gasoline engine might deter potential buyers.
