US Department of Justice Investigates Liberty Media Following Rejection of Andretti’s F1 Team Entry
The U.S. Department of Justice is probing Liberty Media, the proprietors of Formula 1, following their refusal to allow Andretti's application to join F1.
The U.S. Department of Justice is probing Liberty Media, the proprietors of Formula 1, after they decided to turn down the application for Andretti's racing team to join the competition.
At the beginning of this year, Formula 1 rejected Andretti's proposal to become the 11th team in the competition.
In October 2023, the bid from the American team received the green light from the global motorsport authority, the FIA, yet it failed to secure the necessary final endorsement from Formula 1.
In a statement, F1 contended, "Although the Andretti brand is somewhat known among F1 enthusiasts, our findings suggest that it is F1 that would enhance the Andretti brand's value, not the reverse."
Formula 1 has indicated that although Andretti's application to become the 11th team was not accepted for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, even with a partnership with General Motors, the possibility remains open for 2028.
The US Department of Justice has initiated an investigation, as confirmed by Liberty Media’s Greg Maffei on Thursday.
"This morning, it was disclosed that the DOJ is conducting an investigation," Maffei stated in a call with investors, according to The Athletic.
"We plan to fully engage with the investigation, including complying with any requests for information that come with it."
"Our resolve, the resolve of Formula 1, adhered to all relevant US anti-monopoly regulations, and the reasoning behind our choice regarding Andretti has been explained in earlier announcements."
Maffei maintains that F1 is still welcoming to "new participants" even though Andretti's application was declined.
"He further mentioned that they are definitely not opposed to the concept that expanding is incorrect."
A process for growth exists which necessitates the endorsement of both the FIA and F1.
"We're definitely willing to consider applications from new participants and possibly approve them, provided they fulfill the necessary criteria."
