Unhealthy Air Affects 4 in 10 Americans: Can Electric Vehicles Clear the Haze?

Published

on

Coverage: A significant portion of the US population, amounting to 40%, is exposed to poor air quality, which poses a risk to their health. However, the implementation of more stringent emission regulations could offer a solution, as stated by the American Lung Association.

The group's 25th yearly report titled "State of the Air" has revealed that 131 million Americans, which is 39% of the country's residents, are dwelling in zones where the air pollution levels are detrimental to their health. Additionally, there have been unprecedented surges in lethal air contamination, the worst since the report's inception. This conclusion stems from the evaluation of air quality figures collected between 2020 and 2022, which is the latest data on hand, and takes into consideration the updated particulate pollution regulations established by the EPA in February 2024.

The study revealed that there is a significant racial disparity in exposure to air pollutants. In the United States, individuals from minority groups are 2.3 times more likely to reside in areas that do not meet the acceptable standards for three key air quality indicators: short-term and long-term particulate matter, as well as ozone levels, as per the report’s evaluation criteria.

The American Lung Association has recognized the recent steps taken, such as the implementation of tougher emissions standards by the EPA for cars and heavy-duty vehicles, which aim to reduce particle pollution and combat climate change. However, the association is now advocating for more stringent nationwide ozone pollution restrictions too.

Currently, the EPA has implemented stricter regulations on certain pollutants for vehicles produced between 2027-2032. However, these rules do not require the use of electric vehicles. On the other hand, the Department of Energy's postponement of a crucial element in the calculation of emissions across a vehicle fleet might weaken these regulations temporarily. This could result in a higher number of plug-in hybrids which may emit more pollution than expected if they are not charged frequently.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are not the ultimate solution. A study conducted in 2021 focusing on the Los Angeles area indicated that EVs will not entirely address the pollution problems of that urban region. Additionally, emissions from powerplants continue to be a concern. The production of electricity using fossil fuels still has an impact on the environmental impact of an electric vehicle.

Electrify America is currently undergoing significant growth. Electric vehicles are being recognized as a key player in addressing the issue of poor air quality. Meanwhile, Tesla has discontinued its entry-level Model Y, introducing a 320-mile range variant that comes with a modest price increase of $2,000. Plus, there's a conversation around whether the Tesla connector could be the answer to charging concerns. Stay tuned to Green Car Reports for more on these developments. Tesla has phased out its most affordable Model Y option, simultaneously rolling out a newer version with rear-wheel drive and an extended range of 320 miles, at an additional cost of just $2,000. Moreover, Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, has hinted that owners of the recently discontinued base Model Y might be able to access the full range or close to it through an upgrade, subject to regulatory approval. Will this be the case?

Most problems with CCS rapid charging stem from compatibility concerns, such as making payments across various networks, and these issues persist regardless of the plug design, as highlighted by an experienced executive in the charging industry.

This week, as Tesla reduced the size of its team responsible for Supercharger stations, Volkswagen's Electrify America announced it is actively growing its operations.

Recent editions of the standard Tesla Model Y, which have been constructed and distributed, could potentially reach a similar range of 320 miles. This upgrade can be accessed by paying an additional $1,500 to $2,000, subject to the necessary regulatory consents.

Next year, Jeep will introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the Gladiator. Cadillac is having second thoughts about its plan to stop selling gasoline-powered vehicles by 2030. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has made adjustments to the EV tax credit guidelines, potentially increasing the number of eligible electric vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates here at Green Car Reports, where the Biden administration's actions have been detailed…

According to updates disclosed on Friday by agencies under the Biden administration, it is expected that a greater number of electric vehicles will be eligible for the maximum tax credit of $7,500 in the years 2025 and 2026. However, there will be no relaxation of the rules for Chinese manufacturers to access this benefit

Jeep's leading executive in the United States has indicated that the Gladiator plug-in hybrid is slated for release "later in the following year."

The transition from traditional gasoline engines to electric vehicles might take longer than initially anticipated, despite no alterations to the existing plans for electric vehicle production.

The ZDX serves as an introductory model for Acura's electric vehicles, despite being manufactured by General Motors and utilizing their Ultium EV platform as its foundation.

This decision may influence the timing and manner in which additional electric vehicles from China are introduced in the United States.
