Toto Wolff Cautions on Mercedes’ Path to Recovery Despite Positive Signs at Monaco
Toto Wolff remains cautious about Mercedes' potential hurdles despite an upward trend following Monaco
Toto Wolff anticipates the upcoming season and the benefits Mercedes may gain from their enhancements.
Toto Wolff has cautioned that Mercedes might encounter various challenges as they strive to narrow the distance to the leading trio of teams.
Mercedes experienced what could be considered their best weekend of the season during the last race in Monaco, with George Russell securing and maintaining a fifth-place finish.
Russell secured a starting position less than 0.3 seconds behind the pole sitter, marking the first occasion this season that the Mercedes W15 seemed to have improved its equilibrium.
Lewis Hamilton demonstrated impressive speed throughout the three practice rounds but then faced difficulties during the qualifying stage.
Considering Mercedes' performance over the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Wolff is of the opinion that it indicates their progress is on the correct path.
“Certainly, there were differences, yet in terms of qualifying, if you consider the margins, we were nearly there, particularly during the race,” Wolff remarked. “Ultimately, though, I believe the path we’re on is correct. It seems we’ve grasped what’s required in terms of the car's balance.”
"We've been gradually adding elements to improve the situation, and as mentioned before, we noticed an upward trend yesterday. However, it can be likened to a shell's path, characterized by highs and lows, good phases, and not-so-good ones. Thus, we are completely satisfied with the strategy."
"The key point is to gradually enhance your performance, one event at a time. McLaren made an impressive leap forward last season, consistently improving upon a concept that worked well for them. Ferrari has been progressively building their performance, step by step, and we managed to do the same quite effectively last year."
"This is the vision we have for ourselves. It's also a goal we're definitely aiming to achieve in the near future."
Wolff has promised that Mercedes will persist in enhancing their vehicle in the forthcoming races but acknowledged that there might be obstacles for the team.
"He added that the current efforts are likely addressing that issue. He expressed concern that the duvet might not be sufficiently large to cover both the feet and the head at this point, but they are making progress. He also mentioned that Montreal presents a unique challenge in terms of the track. They plan to introduce new elements and make additions for Barcelona."
"Attempt to make gradual progress, while keeping in mind there might also be challenges along the way."
