The Conservative Party has experienced its most significant losses in local elections in recent years, and the outcomes for the mayoral elections in London and the West Midlands are yet to be determined. The Tories have faced a significant reduction in council seats throughout England and have also lost an additional seat in Parliament due to a by-election, all occurring as a general election looms just months away.

The Conservative Party has experienced its most significant electoral loss in recent times, with over half of its council members up for re-election in England failing to secure their seats.

The Labour Party celebrated a landmark victory in the regions of York and North Yorkshire, the home turf of Rishi Sunak, where David Skaith secured a decisive win over Conservative Keane Duncan by a margin of nearly 15,000 votes.

The area, now holding its inaugural mayoral election, encompasses Mr. Sunak's Richmond constituency, a region where Labour has traditionally faced challenges in gaining traction.

Addressing an audience at Northallerton Town Football Club, Sir Keir Starmer expressed, "Our campaign here has been uplifting, and I am immensely proud to be here as the leader of the Labour Party to commemorate this momentous win.

"This win is truly historic – these areas typically haven't favored the Labour Party, yet we've managed to achieve success and convince voters to support us."

Sir Keir reiterated his call for the prime minister to announce a general election.

The party achieved victories in the mayoral elections in the North East and East Midlands, as well as in the Blackpool by-election.

A glimmer of optimism remained for the government as Lord Ben Houchen successfully retained his position as the mayor of Tees Valley.

Insight: The path to victory for the Labour Party remains uncertain following the recent local elections.

At a triumph celebration with Lord Houchen, Rishi Sunak stated: "I also have a word for the Labour Party, as they are aware that they need to secure a victory in this region to win the general election – they understand that.

"They believed that Tees Valley would easily return to their fold – but that wasn't the case."

This win probably silenced discussions of a revolt among disillusioned Conservative MPs who had warned they might remove the prime minister if the outcomes were disastrous. However, it's still uncertain if the Conservatives will retain control of the West Midlands mayoral office.

Labour experienced losses on several councils, including in Bristol where the Green Party increased its position as the dominant party and might now take charge of the city council, despite just missing out on achieving complete control.

In a significant political shift, the newly established Bristol Central constituency now boasts that all of its 14 council members belong to the Green Party, which aims to defeat Labour's shadow culture secretary, Thangam Debbonaire, in the upcoming general election.

Sky News elections expert Professor Michael Thrasher has indicated that despite the disappointing outcomes for the Conservatives, the results do not suggest that Labour is on track to secure a majority in the House of Commons if a general election were held.

Additional outcomes are anticipated this weekend, notably in important mayoral races in London and the West Midlands.

Labour Party's Sadiq Khan is campaigning for another term in London, whereas Conservative Andy Street is striving to maintain his role in the West Midlands.

Speculation was rife in London after the voting ended, suggesting that Mr. Khan might unexpectedly lose to Conservative candidate Susan Hall. However, sources close to Sky News indicate that both political groups now expect the current mayor to retain his position at City Hall.

The election outcomes are anticipated to be announced at 10 PM in London and at 2:15 PM in the West Midlands.

The results of the metro mayoral races in Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, North Tyneside, South Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire have not yet been announced.
