**Title:** Mercedes Reflects on Hamilton’s Departure to Ferrari: “Winning Championships Could Have Made a Difference”
Mercedes reflects on their feelings about Lewis Hamilton's situation: "If we had been securing championship titles, it would have been hard for Lewis to decline."
Mercedes Formula 1 head Andrew Shovlin thinks that Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari was influenced by factors beyond just the performance of the car.
In February, Hamilton surprised the sports community with the news of his transfer to Ferrari.
The decision of the seven-time world champion to depart from the team was unexpected, especially since his contract with Mercedes was valid until the conclusion of 2025.
Moreover, Hamilton has been associated with the Mercedes team ever since he began his Formula 1 journey with McLaren.
Although Mercedes had a slow start this year, they have secured victories in three of the last four races as they prepare for the Dutch Grand Prix later this month.
During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Shovlin was interviewed by select media outlets, including Crash.net. He was questioned on whether Hamilton would have remained with Mercedes had he been aware of the team's level of competitiveness at the midpoint of this season.
Shovlin mentioned that if they had been securing championships, it would have been hard for Lewis to decline.
"Nevertheless, I believe his main reasons aren't solely related to the car's performance."
"It’s evident that he aims to pursue a new phase in his career following his highly successful tenure with Mercedes."
"Given his age, he should act on it sooner rather than later if he intends to do so."
"In my opinion, had we been leading the championship, it likely would have been challenging for him to achieve that."
"However, I believe that a significant aspect of Lewis's ambitions is his desire to join a different team and face new challenges in his professional journey."
"When a person has made up their mind to do something, convincing them to change it can be challenging."
In the past eight races, only Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri have accumulated more points than Hamilton.
Hamilton increased his total number of career wins to 105 after securing victories at both Silverstone and Spa, adding to his previous tally of 103 wins.
