Title: “Daniel Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash as RB’s Italian GP Marred by Penalties and Frustration
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his collision with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the incident involving Haas at the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg clashed at Turn 8 on the first lap of Sunday's race in Monza while competing in the midfield.
According to Ricciardo, he believed there was enough room, but then he experienced a collision. This incident pushed Hulkenberg's Haas onto the dirt track, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he later had to serve an additional 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at the pitstop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at his home circuit for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“In the end, we just didn’t have the speed today, penalties aside,” he remarked.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him. I initially believed we had enough space, but I felt the contact, so I realized I hadn't given him sufficient room. I apologized for that."
“It’s challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed reasonably well afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available to us. From Friday afternoon until today, I was focused on extracting the best performance from the car."
"From my perspective, I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points."
Tsunoda 'frustrated'
According to team member Laurent Mekies, RB's performance in the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg. A collision between Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda resulted in the Japanese driver's race coming to an end.
"I'm quite annoyed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in after colliding with Nico," Tsunoda stated.
"I attempted to maintain as much distance as I could, but it appeared that he froze, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained on the floor.”
"I sensed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't manage to control it."
"The upcoming races in Baku and Singapore are promising for our car's performance, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him crucial track time with the newly upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"In today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to be in control. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Afterward, Nico collided with Yuki, which forced us to retire the car," he stated.
The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have given us better insights into the new updates we implemented here.
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we failed to properly carry out the initial one."
"We must reexamine our protocols in this situation and gain insights from the error made today. While such incidents can occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
