Tesla’s Project ‘Juniper’: Aiming to Regain Market Share with 6-Seat Model Y Revamp for China’s Competitive EV Market
Tesla plans to redesign its 6-seater Model Y for the Chinese market under the project named 'Juniper'. The redesigned Model Y is anticipated to compete with Li Auto's L8 and L9 large SUVs, which have already gained popularity among thousands of affluent families across mainland China.
The American electric car manufacturer plans to produce a six-seater version of the Model Y at its Shanghai production plant next year. This move aims to appeal to the middle-class demographic in the world's biggest car market, as indicated by two individuals familiar with the company's strategy.
The initiative to overhaul Model Y is a component of a project titled "Juniper" that was initiated last year. This move follows after the frontrunner in China's high-end electric vehicle market lost over half of its market share due to intense rivalry and price reductions.
"Tesla now needs to push its boundaries since numerous automakers have launched competitors to its top-selling Model Y," stated Zhao Zhen, a sales manager at Wan Zhuo Auto in Shanghai. "The market consists of discerning customers who constantly seek the highest quality products at the most affordable prices."
