Tesla Shuffles Model Y Offerings: Cancels Base Model, Introduces Longer Range Amid Pricing Confusion

Published

on

Tesla has discontinued its most affordable Model Y variant and introduced a Long Range option. This updated Model Y Long Range, unveiled on Friday, now stands as the most budget-friendly choice for consumers seeking the greatest distance per charge. However, this change comes with a caveat for recent buyers of the entry-level Model Y.

The most recent version of the Model Y Long Range boasts a driving distance of up to 320 miles on a single charge according to EPA estimates, and it can go from a standstill to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Priced at $46,630, this figure encompasses necessary charges for destination and ordering. This offers a 10-mile increase in EPA range compared to the existing Model Y Long Range AWD, priced at $49,630, though the latter can sprint to 60 mph notably faster, in just 4.8 seconds.

The major highlight from Tesla's latest reshuffling of its prices and vehicle offerings isn't what you'd expect. This past Saturday, Tesla's head honcho Elon Musk revealed via his X social media platform that the standard Model Y vehicles recently manufactured and sold come with an extra perk: they possess additional range that can be activated. Customers can unlock this extra 40 to 60 miles of driving distance for a fee of $1,500 to $2,000, provided they get the green light from regulatory bodies.

Message shared by Elon Musk on platform X – dated May 4, 202

This implies that a customer who purchased the entry-level Model Y for $44,630 following Tesla's latest price reductions could potentially upgrade to the version with a 320-mile range for a cumulative expense of $46,630.

The situation raises numerous inquiries—such as the reason behind Tesla's decision to construct cars with a battery capacity that far exceeds what is necessary to achieve the advertised range. This is particularly perplexing given the current pressure on profitability across the industry and the fact that battery capacity represents one of the most significant expenses. There seems to be a hidden narrative that, so far, Musk seems reluctant to disclose. It's possible that further details will emerge once the regulatory clearances are obtained.

Upcoming 2024 version of the Model Y, presented by Tesla, Inc.

The car manufacturer highlights that purchasing any variant of the Model Y makes buyers eligible for the maximum $7,500 electric vehicle tax incentive. This significant benefit reduces the actual expense to $39,130 for numerous families. However, the Model Y no longer stands out as the uncontested leader in driving range. For example, the upcoming 2024 version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, with its rear-wheel drive and extended battery option, is expected to match the 320-mile range set by the EPA, albeit with a bigger battery. Other non-luxury electric crossover vehicles surpassing this range include the Fisker Ocean at 360 miles and the Chevy Blazer EV, anticipated to reach 324 miles, though official figures are pending. Additionally, the Nissan Ariya, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6 are all capable of offering a range of 300 miles or more.

Tesla provides a more uniform experience when it comes to charging, which has been a key differentiator for the firm. However, the future of this benefit seems less secure with the decision to open the network to numerous car manufacturers and the recent dismissal of the whole department.
