Stewards Clear Gutierrez of Blame After Alonso’s Dramatic Australian GP Crash
Gutierrez absolved of fault in dramatic crash with Alonso
Esteban Gutierrez has been exonerated from any responsibility for his race-halting collision with Fernando Alonso at the Australian Grand Prix.
Alonso experienced a frightening barrel roll after colliding with the rear of Gutierrez's Haas car on the 18th lap at the third turn. His vehicle hit the barrier and then got stuck in the gravel. Despite the crash's intensity, which left the McLaren overturned against the barrier, both Alonso and Gutierrez emerged without injuries.
Gutierrez faced scrutiny for potentially causing an incident by decelerating abruptly, but officials concluded that no single driver was fully or mostly at fault.
In fact, Alonso mentioned that he didn't hold anyone responsible and even hinted that he might be at fault for not maintaining a proper distance and misjudging the spacing.
"If he slowed down earlier, it's because he was following his own racing strategy, and I should have predicted that. When you concentrate on the slipstream, you only notice the rear wing, and I was likely too late. At this point, there's nothing more to add; we're both fine."
